About Twenty-Five Tears Ago . . .

The baseball team won the following games: Bowdoin, 3-0 and 2-1; Trinity, 3-1; Yale, 3-2; West Point, 4-2; Harvard, 6-4; Mass. State, 6-4; Amherst, 4-3; Pennsylvania, 4-3 in the most sensational game of the season. . . . Dartmouth scoring three runs in the ninth. Defeats were to Vermont, 3-0; Holy Cross, 4-0; Holy Cross, 5-3; Notre Dame, 8-3; Holy Cross, 3-0; Harvard, 9-1. The line-up included the following:—Schildmiller rf; Conroy ss; Leonard c; Glaze cf and p; Eaton 2b; Brady lb; Emerson and Langdell If; Hobart 3b; Chadbourne c; O'Shea 2b; Mitchell, Severance p. One of the season's features was the famous 0-0, thirteen innings game with Vermont at Burlington, Severance pitching for Dartmouth and Ray Collins for Vermont. . . . Larry Gardner being another Vermonter headed for long years of service in the American League.

In track Harvard won a dual meet, 68-49. . . . Capt. Shaw equalled World's High Hurdle Record in 15.1 . . . other Dartmouth place winners were Sherman, Hawley, Barstow, Evans, Cams, Walker, E. R. Palmer, Johnson, Pevear, Gray. Several alumni officiated . . . Dr. C. S. Little, Dr. Charles Whelan, Elmer C. Potter, Harry Blythe, William Jennings, George Dow, E. JC. Hall, A. B. Farmer, Irving J. French, Dr. C. E. Bolser.

Dartmouth won the New England meetwith Shaw, Sherman and Pevear scoring36 of the 49 points . . . others scorers wereShipley, Cams, Noyes, E. R. Palmer, Johnson. Well-known competitors were Mayhew of Brown, Horrax of Williams, Colbath of Bowdoin.

Musical clubs made trips to Amherst and Smith . . . those making the trip were: '08: Badger, Currier, Hinman, Norton, Prentice, Robinson, Rugg, Smith, Soule; '09: Bailey, Childs, Colley, Dowdall, Hitchcock, Hull, Kivel, Martin, Mason, McLoud, Naylor, Ryan, Rogers, Stucklen, Swenson, Watson, Walker; '10: Comstock, Knapp, Meredith, Reed, Jones, Shattuck, Steward, Taylor, Thurber, Winship, Young; '11: Ayers, Backus, Gardner, Herron, Keeler, Keough, Leach, Pounds, Walker, Warren. 1910 won Interclass meet with 45 points; 'OB next with 38; then 'l2 with 28 and '09 with 13.

New staff of The Dartmouth was R. L. Theller, editor-in-chief; R. M. Stone, managing editor; J. R. Everett, athletic editor; B. C. French, alumni-local editor; C. M. Sheldon, business manager. New gym assured with pledges amounting to over $10,000. Prof. "Type" Hitchcock resigned after being on faculty since 1869. Joe Graves and Bill Pounds elected captains of the sophomore and freshman baseball teams, respectively. Mort Hull '09 elected glee club leader; Dan Watson '09, mandolin club leader. Junior Prom committee was F. B. Williams, chairman, N. J Howland, F. H. Morawski, A. E. Mewton,'T. C. Wellsted. "Dutch" Schildmiller elected baseball captain, and Herman L. Walker '09, track leader. Sheldon Smith "10 won New England intercollegiate tennis championship at Longwood by defeating his team-mate "Shorty" Stern '10. Paene Meet held.

Book agents were pestiferous in those days. . . . "Wink" Fisk (in one of his weak moments) signed up . . . for two years thereafter "Wink's" agent-collector took various forms around Shurtleff . . . each step on the walk, each knock on the door was forboding . . . more than once sharp knocks by "Runt" Martin at al sent "Wink" scurrying into the closet to burrow among Bill Knight's non-washed football clothes . . . Jack Corcoran could relate a few about Shurtleff . . . one of his favorites was "Father Chesley and the Chicken" . . . space does not permit details, perhaps fittingly.

Temporary baseball coach Ralph Glaze cut squad to following men—Gathers, Leonard, Ingersoll, Chadbourne, Ganley; Pitchers, Glaze, Sherwin, Thompson, West, Grant, Vehmeyer, Hammond, Severance; ist Base, Schildmiller, Burns, Pounds; 2nd Base, Emerson, Stark, Conroy, O'Shea; 3rd Base, Smith, Hobart, Mitchell; Shortstop, Eaton, Kelly; Fielders, Coggins, Langdell, Brady—Exeter appointed her first Dartmouth football coach, Johnny Glaze—another former Dartmouth player, Walter Lillard, is coaching Andover—Nat Sherman '10 broke indoor high jump record at 5 ft. 103/8 inches at Indoor Handicap Meet; "Coke" Holdman 'll made 5 ft. 93/8 inches; Art Shaw '08 won dash with Jack Marks '11 taking second place; Jess Hawley '09 won the shot put, and "went up the rope like lightning" to win the rope-climbing contest; Blake '08 and Kimball '11 won the three-legged race from Shaw '08 and Cams '08, and Gray '08 and Thomas '10; Ralph Taylor '10 won the sack race- Supervisor of Buildings Harry Wellman put in operation a plan prohibiting the buying and selling of goods in dormitories without licenses, and allowing only those selling foodstuffs in the dormitories during evenings—Palaeopitus barred use of college labels on suit-cases—Sid Hazelton '09 signed up with Boston Americans; Micky McLane '09 with Lowell of New England League; Arthur Shoppelry '09 and "Kid" Richardson '08 are considering offers from Trenton of the Tri-State League—"Skinny" Marshall's Restaurant offers a "Regular Dinner at Noon" of soup, meat, potatoes, vegetable, pie, coffee, tea or milk for 35 cents —"Masquerade Ball" at the Commercial House Dancing Emporium with Paul Felt '06 as Floor Director; good time was had by all—Class secretaries held annual meeting in Hanover; Dana M. Dustan 'BO and Ernest M. Hopkins '01 elected president and secretary, respectively.

At an Indoor Meet the Fat Man's Race between Thayer, Dillingham, Jordan and Hubert was a feature.
