COLLEGE OPENED Sept. 23 per usual .... with new President, Ernest Fox Nichols, who promptly told sophomore class (1918) that hazing must stop "the penalty for this offense may be permanent separation from College." .... football hopes ran high (as they generally do at Hanover in early fall, and this present 1934 season being no exception) .... led by All-American guard, Capt. Clarke Tobin '10, and coached by Walter Lillard 'O5, assisted by Bill Randall '96, Tom Keady 'O5 and Joe Brusse 'O9 with "Bush" Kingsford '9B and Trainer Dole ("Doc" Bowler being on sabbatical feave) in charge of physical attentions .... the club took Mass. Inauguration of President Ernest Fox Nichols brought most notable academic gathering in history of Dartmouth to Hanover .... it included Ambassador James Bryce, Ex-President Eliot of Harvard; Presidents Lowell of Harvard, Angell of Michigan, Hadley of Yale, Woodrow Wilson of Princeton, Butler of Columbia, Faunce of Brown, Buckham of Vermont, Schurman of Cornell, Hyde of Bowdoin, Finley of New York, VanHise of Wisconsin, Maclaurin of M. I. T., Thomas of Middlebury, Davis of Chicago Theological . . . . Cornerstone of New Gym laid after inauguration ceremonies .... Secretary E. M. Hopkins was Hanover's busiest man during those days .... Tom Keady was appointed by the Athletic Council to fill the newly created position of Director of Athletics, a step in the "correlation of the coaching departments and preservation of experience gained from successive coaches" . . . . "well-meant criticism and helpful suggestions were welcomed."
It looks as though alumni were going tobe increasingly active this fall . ... alarge number visited Hanover during thesummer months .... the new footballregime is attracting attention but by nostretch of the imagination should we belike the Boston alumnus who was reportedas willing to make the wild bet that Dartmouth would win every game this fall.... that's expecting too much . . . .this column's immediate desire is to takeadvantage of this activity to obtain unusualsingle photos, snapshots, group pictures,anecdotes and items of interest.
