FOOTBALL COACHING staff for next year announced .... Head Coach, Walter Lillard '05; Assistants, Bill Randall '96, Bull Turner '04 and Joe Gilman '05 .... others expected to help are Charlie Boyle '01, Dr. Whalen '01, "Wife" Jennings 'OO, E. K. Hall '92 and "Squash" Little '91 . . . . the Hockey Team after losing to McGill 7-2, won from Yale 3-2, Williams 3-2, Columbia 2-1 and Princeton 3-2; Erhard, Pettengill, Leighton, Stucklen, Perry, Doe and Marston, all 'O9, being the team which put Dartmouth at top of the League . . . . the Basketball Team needed rejuvenation according to somebody's brilliant ideas, and the College was scoured for material .... Dutch Schildmiller returned to the game and Clarke Tobin was drafted as center .... the following line-up trimmed Springfield Training 50-13, rg, Mullen, Avery; lg, Schildmiller; c, Tobin, Gibson, McCarty; rf, Hart, Buck, Goodere; If, Brady.
The idea was so brilliant that they went after more football linemen and landed this time "Bolliver" Sherwin who in those days was built more like a Lithuanian wrestler than a basketball Adonis .... New Hampshire State happened to be next on the schedule .... capacity crowd for they could Ballyhoo a game then, teams lined up on floor with Dartmouth having . . . . rf, Sherwin (football); If, Brady (football); c, Tobin (football); rg, Mullen (So. Boston Irishman); lg, Schildmiller (football) Referee, little Jimmie Kilouhry who looked lost among the players but then he was Irish and was protected by Keith Pevear (football) as Timer . . . . Jimmie blew his whistle .... before Dartmouth's footballers could coordinate their minds and muscles and basketball, New Hampshire's basketeers had dumped a couple of goals into unguarded baskets .... Dutch Schildmiller responded to the crowd's demands for spilled blood and made the first flying tackle .... then in quick succession King Brady tripped an opponent who slid halfway to Lebanon .... Mister Kilourhy got squashed against the wall .... Tobe sat on a 122 lb. N. H. guard .... and the half ended with everyone's nerves raw and Dartmouth leading, 7-4 .... at start of second half Little Kilourhy dressed in football helmet and hockey shin-guards returned to the floor .... he sermonized both teams severely, thumbed his nose at the crowd and the game was on ... . tricky Johnny Mullen, unburdened by weight, was all over the floor .... "Bolliver" Sherwin blocked, fit and puffed .... the other footballers thought they were licking Princeton at the Polo Grounds again .... to prevent actual manslaughter Bill Hart, Charlie Gibson and Phil Avery were sent into the melee .... finally, someone blew the whistle . . . . Dartmouth had won 22-8 on the gore-covered floor .... Mister Kilourhy was a wreck .... arnica flowed freely on the dingy ground floor .... it was the best show of the season .... the squad was de-footballed .... lost to Yale, 13-11 and Williams, 25-16 . . . . Capt. Dingle had returned to the game and with Schild- miller, Mullin, Brady, Hedges and Wiley composed the team.
Secretary E. M. Hopkins made trip among alumni associations in Albany, Pittsburg, Cleveland, St. Paul, Omaha, Lincoln, Denver and St. Louis.
This reference to "Hoppy" brings something of more recent happening to our mind .... it's worth repeating because it will show you old bucks how far the Secretary of the College of our day has travelled in accomplishment, public opinion and everything else
A few years ago when it was customary to entertain directors, coaches and even star players of friendly colleges over the Norwich week-end at Hanover, the athletic head of a large eastern institution, spotting "Hoppy" sauntering around the field exchanging friendly greetings with Dartmouth coaches and players exclaimed enthusiastically "Gee, if we had that man as our President, we'd have the greatest college in the world!" .... $37,000 already paid into treasury for New Gym . . . . Freshman Hockey Squad composed of Boutwell, Bullard, Cabot, Gammons, Home, Luitweiler, McCarty and McLaughlin.
