The freshman football team, under Coaches Earl Hamilton and Bill Craver with assistance from former Big Green players Jim Muller, Brian Hepburn, Scott Palmer and Terry O'Neil, seems to have better potential than recent freshman teams, but lacks depth.
The Indians won their first game 21-6 over Brown as Lee Bateman recovered a Bruin fumble in the end zone for one tally and halfback Bill King ran around end for two other scores. They lost their second game decisively to Holy Cross, 36-19. Outstanding for the Indians have been Mark Rutosky, an All-State quarterback, and halfbacks Bill King and Mike Bisceglia. John Krumme has also played well at halfback.
The freshman guard and end posts seem adequately manned. Jerry Raczka and Larry Chapman are a pair of fine guards, while Mike Nyquist, Roger Addleman, Jim Palmer and Frank Finstwait provide strength and depth at the end posts. Bill Wellstead and Tom Torreis have looked promising at fullback, but beyond this point the material gets thin. Harvard, Yale and New Hampshire remain on the schedule.
The freshman soccer team, coached by Ail-American goalie Randy Malin, to date has defeated Brewster Academy, 4-1, and Kimball Union Academy, 4-2, and has lost to Andover, 2-0. The current lineup has Dave Smoyer at goal, Skip Matoon and John Newman at the fullback posts, and John King, Skip Eichen, Alex Bass and Peter Gina at halfback. Kirk Vernon plays at center with Bill Weber and Bill Bates on the inside forward posts and Lee Kincaid and Steve Chase at the wings.
The '63 cross-country team took second to Yale in an opening triangular meet, with Yale getting 26 points, Dartmouth 43, and Columbia 54. Ray Benson was the first Dartmouth runner across, finishing third. He was trailed by Charlie Berg, Steve Clearly, Charlie Weidenmayer and Dick Godfrey.
Against Brown, in a dual meet, the Indian runners lost by a 23-34 score. This time Berg, who is improving rapidly, took second place, with Benson third, Clearly seventh, and Weidenmayer tenth. Berg, incidentally, never ran cross country before coming to Dartmouth.
