After a period of frustration by the weather man, who refused to provide ice, the hockey team held its first workout in Baker Rink on December 10, and five days later defeated St. Anselm's, 5 to 1, in the opening game of the season. Despite the brevity of its preparation, the Green sextet got away to a fairly impressive start, and gave evidence that it will make a stubborn defense of its Quadrangular League championship, captured from Harvard, Yale and Princeton last year during the first season under Coach Herb Gill.
Dartmouth's first line of Captain Paul Guibord and "Red" Riley, wings, and Junie Allen, center, appears to be, a worthy successor to that of last year. It has the speed which Coach Gill demands, and gave early signs against St. Anselm's of finesse and shooting ability. Vincent Fitzpatrick and Al Butler seem slated to be the first defense pair, and this burly combination should be entirely adequate with a little more competition. Up to the opening game the goalie position was supposed to present the gravest problem, but Sam Harris performed so brilliantly in the nets that the outlook for the Green puckmen has been considerably brightened.
Three of Dartmouth's five goals were scored with the first team on the ice, two by Allen and one by Guibord. The remaining two goals were netted by Jay Wolff, sparkling wing in the second line. Gordon Bennett, at right wing, and Les Barrett, at center, team up with Wolff in the reserve line, although Barrett was out of the lineup against St. Anselm's and was replaced by Jack Devlin, another sophomore. Don Otis and "Red" O'Hare are the second defense pair, with "Red" Pounder as secondstring goalie. Four members of the second club are sophomores (Bennett, Barrett, Otis and Pounder), and the success of Dartmouth's league campaign will rest, in the final analysis, with the unknown qualities of these reserves. The second line, like that of last year, packs more weight than the first, and may develop into an equally powerful scoring unit.
