Excerpts from THE DARTMOUTH, issues ofSept; 1878 to June 1879
IF WE WERE back about a couple of years, boating rows, boating meetings, boating subscriptions (uncollectible), boating editorials, etc., would be in order at this time, but Carrigan has graduated and those happy days are gone The campus was open for football earlier this season than for many years. In 1876, the first game was played April 20; in 1877, April 5; and in 1878, April 4 A movement is on foot to choose elevens from the several classes and play the English game of football Spring has undoubtedly come. Hod Frary's chimney burnt out last Monday and the proprietor himself was seen outside the hotel minus hat, coat and vest The Rugby ground has been laid out on the campus, goals set up at the right distances apart on east and west sides of the field, a ball purchased and all other necessary arrangements made A large audience in the College Church, on Tuesday evening, heard the College Glee Club give one of its much-wished-for concerts. Although th'e programme was long the audience insisted on several encores and one or two extra pieces were sung by request. The Hanover Glee and Madrigal Club gave two excellent selections. All went away more than satisfied The number of books in the College Library at present is 55,170, an increase of 570 since last year The graduating class this year is the largest since 1843 and the fourth largest class ever graduated in Dartmouth. It has 73 members.
Catalogues came on Tuesday. The following is a summary of officers and students: faculty, 33; 1 resident graduate. In the Academical Dept. there are 48 seniors; 52 juniors; 51 sophomores; 64 freshmen. In the Scientific Dept. there are 53 in the four classes. In the Agricultural College, 14 in the three classes. In the Thayer School, 2; Medical Dept., 100 in both recitation and lecture course The following students wield the birch the coming winter (figures given instead of name and places); seniors, 12; juniors, 19; sophomores, 6. .... The faculty have secured Rev. William J. Tucker to deliver the address before the Christian Fraternity the Sunday preceding Commencement We should judge from the nonattendance of the faculty at chapel that the monitor was not doing his duty Yesterday was the day of prayer for colleges and all college exercises were omitted Only two weeks more until the pedagogues will return, and those vacant seats in the chapel will be filled once more The citizens of Hanover contemplate putting up a telephone line between this place and Norwich Depot Hough is teaching in town. "Mega" speaks very highly of his school. The scholars are evidently afraid of that fellow who wears specks and kicks football like the d il The invitation extended to the faculty by Capt. Thayer to be present in the gymnasium when the nine were in training last Saturday was accepted by quite a number. They expressed themselves exceedingly well pleased The sophomores indulged in an outing to Keene, N. H. and a class supper at the Eagle Hotel last Saturday. 11 is reported as an all-round good time. The Glee Club concert for the benefit of the Knseball Association was a great success.
