ASUMMARY OF the past year of fine activity and the interest displayed by the members of the Dartmouth Club of Detroit shouldn't really begin with that disastrous meeting between the Varsity Hockey Team and the Holzbaugh SemiPro Team last winter, but that event was well-attended, with a block of 500 seats filled with Dartmouth enthusiasts to see their game team take a trimming, but only because they were playing in the wrong league.
Dearborn Inn, with its manager, John Packard '25, was host to the club for the Dartmouth Night Celebration, as well as for the Annual Meeting held two weeks later. William McCarter '19 was the guest of honor at the latter gathering, which included public and preparatory school officials along with members of the Northeastern High football team. This school was presented with the Dartmouth Cup, which goes annually to the high school whose football team has the highest combined rating in scholarship and standing in the city league.
The new officers elected at this meeting, and who have carried the club through in good shape to date are Ralph Norton '18, president; Arthur Lyman '27, vice president; Ford Whelden '25, treasurer; and Richard Brown '29, secretary. Charles Bennett 'OB and Stavert Hudson '19 were elected to serve for a three-year term on the Executive Committee.
The Glee Club Concert held at the BookCadillac Hotel drew 350 friends of Dartmouth and was thoroughly enjoyed' by those who came. It was disappointing not to have the Concert coincide with spring vacation so that the Detroit undergraduates could also attend.
During the summer a meet was held with the Cornell Club at the Indianwood Country Club, combining contests in golf and baseball, and in a crew race. No one seemed to have kept track of the scores, so the only result obtainable for the press was the fact that everyone had a good time. Among other activities, there has been much touch football played by John '26 and Louis '32 Heavenrich, Johnnie Manser '26, Art Lyman '27, Heinie Swarthout '30, and Paul Krider '31.
Along more serious lines, the club has established the Dartmouth Club of Detroit Loan Fund, with an initial amount of 1500.00. This was given to Dartmouth with no other strings than it should be used for scholarship aid, under the direction and at the discretion of the College.
Luncheons have been held throughout the year every Tuesday noon at the Savoyard Club on the roof of the Buhl Building, with good attendance. Sixty-seven men have paid their dues for this year, more than ever before in the history of the club. That fact can be attributed to the untiring work of our loyal and active treasurer, Ford Whelden '25.
Some who have graced our membership have, had to leave us for various reasons, all with our regrets: Ralph Tucker '25, Charlie McAllister '31, Dave Kirby '32. Those we have had the pleasure to welcome to Detroit include: George Manser '26, Ford Blickley '28, Cleve McKenna '29, Paul Krider '31, and Pop Nairne '36.
