The Fifth Annual Conference on Conservation of Marriage and the Family was held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N. C., on April 11-14, 1939, under the direction of Prof. Ernest R. Groves. Duke University, as in former years, cooperated in the conference. A great interest in this subject, which Prof. Groves teaches, has been awakened in the educational institutions of the South and Southwest among sociologists and psychiatrists, gynecologists, and social workers. The program developed year by year in these conferences has broadened measurably, and increased attendance indicates the importance of the subject. Both Ernest and his wife have written much on this subject and have won a place of high standing in this pioneering field.
Mrs. Alfred Rubens announces the marriage of her daughter, Anita Rubens, to David Ryder Kenerson on Friday, the Fourteenth of April, 1939, at Concord, N. H. David, it will be recalled, was the last excuse Ned Kenerson furnished for spending spare time in Hanover. May we extend our best wishes and congratulations to the happy couple.
The New York Herald-Tribune of April 12 printed an account of an unusual presentation made to our classmate, U. S. Comptroller Fred H. Brown, on the occasion of his taking the oath of office. His remarkable spittoon marksmanship was the subject of reward by a group of his former colleagues in the Senate, when they presented him with a new shiny spittoon and a plug of tobacco. Undoubtedly it brought from the files of Fred's memory the days of "Hellgate," when medals were given for proficiency in the arts.
Last year the class maintained its fine record in the Alumni Fund campaign both as regards the amount contributed and the number of contributors. 68% of the class sent something in response to Bolz French's request. Strenuous endeavor is being made by Bolz this year to increase that percentage, and we can help him greatly by sending along our contributions at once. Even a small gift, less than you would like to make, will place your name on the list of supporters of the College and help swell the percentage of givers.
"Squeaks from the Golden Gate" announces the fact under date of March, '939' that Wynne Mattison attended the monthly dinner of the Dartmouth Association of Northern California. Wynne is now located in Denver, but he had left his wife and daughter in California, where the latter is finishing her education, hence the magnetic attraction back to his old stamping ground. Would that his daughter ]had desired an eastern college education. We might then have sighted Wynne occasionally.
Meat and Sue Hanlon recently flew to New York to pass judgment on the World's Fair and to contact that inimitable New York '03 crowd: Kid, Bucky, and Bolz. Reports out of New York on one of Bolz' spare postcards lead one to think that the above-named have recently had their heads together in true Dartmouth fashion. Time will tell.
We have now not only taken the last bit of news from the files, but we have dusted the corners with the hope of finding one more bit of news of the Potholesker crowd. Next year we will try to contact more of you. One fact stands out clearly, if you really want a column of news of your classmates you must quit your high-hatting and write your Secretary the letter you have put off for so long. Adios.
