After a lapse of several months it seems altogether fitting to open these notes with the few items accumulated during the summer from the "Bride and Groom" department. On August 16th Carroll W. McPherson and Elizabeth Roth were married in Buffalo, N. Y., where "Red" works for the BUFFALO NEWS, formerly as head of the rewrite department but for the past year editing the news items broadcast hourly over the two radio stations operated by the paper From the depths of N. J. comes word of the marriage of Ermond T. Hughes of Cranbury to Carolyn Applegate, graduate of N. J. College for Women, on August 24th. "Uz" holds a position with the Unemployment Compensation Commission of Perth Abboy. The new home will be Trenton

With politics so strongly in and on the air these days, it is interesting to note that '23 has its share of political careers either successfully started or furthered during recent months. Phil Bowker has been in the Mass. Legislature for several terms and is considered one of the outstanding younger Republicans around Boston. This Fall Phil ran for the nomination of Representative in Congress, from his district against the veteran and' present incumbent Henry Luce. Phil was defeated but the BOSTON HERALD noted editorially that the contest "projects a new figure into STATE WIDE politics in the person of Philip G. Bowker who though beaten carried his home town and received more than twice as many votes as the next contender—large enough to place him in line for the nomination two years hence".... a three column feature article in one of the Hartford, Conn., papers was. devoted to Frankie Smith's record as State Chairman of the Democratic Committee,, a position he has held since 1934 when he took over the job at the age of 32 years.. The article was apparently written to forestall Frankie's most recent and insistent wish to return to private life and to his. businesses (two lumber concerns) for it concludes "But Smith knows that his tactical leadership has been far too valuable for the Democrats to permit him to step, down just before the 1940 campaign.". .. . From Rockford, 111., comes a report the Karl Williams was one of the official delegates to the Republican National Convention In the recent primaries Ralph Duffy was elected a delegate to the Mass. State Republican Convention from Worcester.

Nat Harmon has been more or less out of circulation '23-wise for quite some time which made his joining our week-end reunion this summer doubly pleasant and in addition gave us the opportunity to put him through a regular third degree, the results of which will interest you. After a Tuck School degree in 1924 Nat joined the home office of N. H. Fire Ins. Cos., in his native Manchester. He worked in several of their departments until 1930 when he accepted a chance to become a teacher at the Albany (N. Y.) Business College. He has been there ever since conducting classes in Accounting, Law, Statistics, Finance and also serving as Director of Evening School during the Winter term. Mrs. Nat is the former Lois Bristol of Vergennes, Vt. Until a better claim comes along we will award Nat and Lois the grand prize for raising future Dartmouth men with four of them coming along in William, 10, Nathaniel, 6, David, 31/2, and Hobart, 3 mos. Nat's extra curriculum activities consist of golf, trout fishing, and raising purebred Cocker Spaniels to which this Fall will be added Dartmouth Alumni activities in the Albany district, he having last Spring been elected secretary of the D. C. of Northeastern New York.

I know you were all as interested as I was in Bob McMillan's contribution to the "Letters" section of the October issue. A very proper addition to Bob's letter comes from an article in the N. Y. Times describing how one day during manoeuvers everyone in Bob's company became suddenly solicitous of his legs. It all remained a mystery until time for the company to report for mail when the answer, in the form of a pair of crutches, was borne to Bob by a detail of three while the company was called to rigid attention. Curt Abel '25 who had used them the past winter as an aid to navigation after breaking his leg skiing had sent them to Bob in case he gave out under the strain of military training but the only use Bob put them to was to hang them above his tent door like crossed sabers.

Pete Jones writes that Pudge Neidlinger joined him again this summer in the Eastern Yacht Club's cruise up the Maine coast TIDE published recently under the title From Cheese to Virginia Dare a picture of Walt Jarmon, the occasion being his appointment to the newly-created position of Merchandising and Advertising Manager of Virginia Dare Extract Co. Cap claims to be through with books, they being long on prestige but short on dough and figures to go back to magazine fiction provided. of course, the magazines agree After practicing law independently for ten years, Len Bronner and Prof. I.
