Verney Russell has been transferred from the Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, Pocatello, Idaho, to Wenatchee, Washington, where he is resident engineer in charge of Migratory Fish Control, Columbia Basin Project, under the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Restoration. Briefly, Russell explains this interesting work: "In the building of the Grand Coulee Dam, the salmon run of the Columbia River has been interrupted, and in order to rehabilitate this run of migratory fish, the Bureau of Reclamation is building at Leavenworth, Washington, the largest salmon hatchery in the world. There will be either two or three auxiliary hatcheries; two of these will be in the state of Washington on rivers tributary to the Columbia, and the third, if built, will be at Okanogan Falls in Canada, the Okanogan also being a tributary to the Columbia River. At Rock Island Dam across the Columbia, eleven miles below Wenatchee, we trap the salmon and by the use of specially designed trucks transport them to the Leavenworth Hatchery where they are artificially spawned. The eggs are then transported to the proper hatcheries, and when the small fish are of suitable size they will be put in the streams and will go back to the ocean. In four years they will return to the stream into which the small fish were placed."
The final spring luncheon of the class will be at the Parker House, Boston, Friday, April 5, at twelve-thirty.
The reunion dates are June I4th-i6th inclusive. PLAN NOW TO ATTEND.
