VITAL PROBLEMS OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION IN THE UNITED

STATES, Dr. Roy J. Defarrari '12, Secretary General, The Catholic Universityof America. Catholic University ofAmerica Press, Washington, D. C. 231pages. $2.75.

THIS SYMPOSIUM of lectures delivered in 1959 by men connected with the Catholic University of America as part of the celebration of the semi-centennial year of the founding of the University contains much to attract the attention and challenge the thought not only of those responsible for Catholic education but also of those who may be interested as administrators, teachers, or patrons of our system of public education.

References to the perplexity of leaders of education concerning the degree of effectiveness with which the problems of economic, social, and religious change are met, to the progressive movement, to the rejection of the disciplinary ideal, to relaxation of standards, to juvenile delinquency, to accrediting or approving agencies and their effect upon teacher training, to government control of education, to the greater spiritual philosophy of Catholic as compared with secular education, invite the careful consideration of the reader whatever his faith.

School clinics, vocational education, state support of Catholic schools, professional preparation of teachers, the program of the secondary school, the contribution of the Catholic college to higher education, the early college with its meager equipment and limited curriculum as contrasted with its present-day "upholstered descendent," are dealt with in a manner to interest the reader. The lecture by Dr. Defarrari, the editor, on "Catholic Education and the Approving Agencies" will be of especial interest to teachers of education in the liberal arts colleges.

Of course, as is to be expected, emphasis is placed on the teaching of religion.
