Your Acting Secretary early in April took a trip to Vermont via Greenfield, Mass. Found Abbott in good spirits and looking just the same as during our calls last year. The next day, being in Bennington, we took a trip to Schaghticoke, New York, to see our dear friend "Shorty" Bowers. We found the retired Reverend and Mrs. Bowers very pleasantly and apparently happily located close to the church which he served previously for seven or eight years. The visit was altogether too short but business demanded our return to Bennington. Visited Judge "Ed" Griffith the next day at Manchester, Vermont. He had just about made up his mind to go down to the Boston Alumni Dinner when he learned that Mrs. Griffith had been taken seriously ill. Late information is that Mrs. Griffith was sick for several weeks, nearly had pneumonia, and at this writing is barely able to be around. Their daughter, Grace, is very active in Seminary matters at Burr and Burton's, Manchester, of which the Judge is a distinguished alumnus. Grace is editor of the school magazine, the BURTONIAN. The visit with Griffith was very pleasant up to the time of his call home, as he reminisced about his early days in New York with Henry Ide, Bill Mann, and others. Among other interesting facts, he advised that he had had a case of "extosis oscalsis," whatever that is. It evidently has not affected him very seriously as he seemed in good health and good spirits.
The next day the "King" journeyed with your Acting Secretary to Boston via Nashua. At Nashua, we visited with "Bob" Boutelle and Mrs. Boutelle for a short time. It seems that this was the first time the "King" had seen "Bob" since our commencement, and they certainly enjoyed their visit together.
At the Boston Dartmouth Alumni Dinner that evening, April twelfth, three usually reliable attendants were unable to be present. The weather was extremely bad and Charles Gordon did not feel that he should attempt it. "Zak" Chandler telephoned that he was sick (not seriously) in bed and could not come, while George Greeley sent word that other matters demanded his attention elsewhere. However, President Guy Cox, the "King" and your Acting Secretary held the fort for '93 at a table at which were also '91 and '92 men. It is to be regretted that the weather was so bad that several other '93 men were unable to attend this largest of all Alumni Association Dinners.
Dr. Perley Oakland Place, head of the Latin Department at Syracuse University, was in Boston April fifteenth and visited with President Guy Cox at the Somerset Hotel in the evening before taking his train home. It was a great pleasure for your Acting Secretary to sit back and listen to these two erudite members of the class discuss Latin books and the Romans.
Late information advises that Judge Chandler has completely recovered from a recent illness and is attending to his judicial duties at Lawrence. We also learn that Gordon is visiting his daughter at New Rochelle, New York, apparently about as usual physically.
A call on Sam Hunt found him busy with all kinds of civic functions. Manchester is fortunate indeed to have so public spirited a citizen, able to give him time for the welfare of the city and its people. "Skid" appears to be about the same; continues with his writings for various newspapers.
