Here and There

This summer will find Clem Burnap working for the Bethlehem Steel Co. in Quincy, Mass., while waiting for another year at MIT. Harry Jones has another of those ideal jobs and evidently is all wrapped up in his work. He's teaching French at Westbrook Junior College (for girls) in Portland, Maine and says he may have something important to announce in a very short while. While on the subject of important announcements "Sport" White writes that he is also about to do something about a certain young lady who has been making him day dream. Gus Zitrides has finally made a big decision and has given up law for a full time coaching job at Cornell—at last Cornell will be putting out some good linemen.

From Bob Dickgiesser. . . ."DonWheaton is with the Central Hanover Bank in N. Y., taking care of the butter and egg district and also keeping close tabs on a certain Conn. College queen. Bill Cunningham is also in banking, working for his father at the Bronx Savings Bank in N. Y." Tom Brooks informs us that he ran into Joe Hoover while skiing not so long ago and Joe claims that he is slaving like nothing human at Babson's Business School in Wellesley, Mass., (are you working on the books Joe?). Another elusive mystery has been cleared up through the kindness of Bill Buckley for we find that Roy Stan- wood has been seeing the country, thanks to Seaboard Oil Co., and at the moment may be found in New Orleans.

Word pictures: Bill Lee following a family tradition at the U of Rochester Med School John "Scoop" Mecklin changing papers and now with the Hartford (Conn.) Newsdaily Malcolm Wallis getting ready for what may come with the Wright Aircraft Corp Pem Pleasants settled in a little love nest in Brookline, Mass., and working for General Foods Red Jensen learning the game from the Springfield Fire and Marine Insurance Co. .... Sandy MacLeod being quite the farmer down Middleburg (Va.) way

Jerry Beatty covering the Federal District Courts, Narcotics Bureau and Secret Service for The Newark News and enjoying every second of it

From John Vincens... ."At present I'm writing for the Brookline Press, recording murder, mahem, rape and romance Latest reports have Steve Randall still selling rugs and in his spare time steaming tobacco stamps to see if they'll go through the mails with the Famous American series. 'Gub-Gub' Younger says that he's winning honor and advancement at a five and dime store in Newark. Whipp is general manager of the department of incoming mail at Allied Oil Co. in Cleveland and Johnny Ledyard has resumed his studies at Penn being a Junior. Bob Whidden sees his B & M planes fly past every day from the wilds of Maine. Harold Fink is a big operator in dry goods Dave Walsh is dividing his time between local gasoline and beer pumps. Roy White is probably president of Macy's by now and Ken Weidaw is still pushing out insurance for John Hancock."

It is with much pride that we announce the recent honor bestowed upon Bill Remington. Bill, it seems, has just received appointment as University Fellow for the academic year 1940-41 (with an annual award of $1500) at Columbia.

DOWN THE AISLE Now I'm sure it's taking the place of baseball, for the announcements are still coming in. Starting the ball rolling last month was Bill Risley with his marriage to Miss Mary Taylor Snyder of Pelham Manor, N. Y. Your Secretary was on hand with pad and pencil and took note of the gay festivities. Among the ushers were such '39 well knowns as Ken Mac Donald, Hank Mills (up from Texas), Les McMillin, Bill Harrison, Austin Igleheart, and Bob Fletcher. After a skiing honeymoon "Ris" and Mary will make their home in Los Angeles. May aoth culminated another Hanover romance when Peg Goldsmith became Mrs. Henry B. Britton in New Rochelle, N. Y. Although I have no definite news of the grea't event you can rest assured that many of the DKE's were present. If you will go back to the old days of '35-'36 you will perhaps remember Heinie Hyde Ex. Well Heinie was also a May bridegroom—marrying Miss Elaine Abbott Bennett of Ipswich, Mass. This is late but perhaps some of you haven't heard. .. .in short, Bob Cushman has announced his engagement to Miss Mary Shorey of Ardsley-on-Hudson and Smith. The Theta Delt and C & G boys will certainly recall Mary as a frequent Hanover visitor. From Jake Holland comes the news that Bud Clifford is to take the vows shortly with Miss Elizabeth Parks who is also well known up Hanover way.

From Jerry Beatty...."I have been a long engaged man. .. .her name is Joan Churchill and she comes from a long line of Dartmouth, her poppa, cousin and brother-in-law being ex Big Greeners. As yet there is no definite date for the wedding." Miss May Hubbard of Bridgeport, Conn, announced the engagement of her niece, Miss Elizabeth Woodhill Cone of Skidmore '39 to Wells Bates. .. .rumor has it that it will be a June wedding. Theta Chi boys will be glad to learn that Jim Schofield was married recently to Miss Martha Rodman Lambert of New Brunswick, N. J. Jim is located with the Metropolitan Life Insurance housing project and therefore the newlyweds will be living in N. Y. At last those ugly rumors about Phil Wentworth have come true. The girl is Miss Betty Macdonald of Sullins (Va.) College and N. Y. The big day hasn't been determined as yet, but with Phil working for the Webster Service Corporation we can at least be sure that the future Mr. and Mrs. will be located in or around N. Y.

Big news for June will be the weddings of Jim Mathes and Ken Mac Donald which, incidentally, are a day apart. Jim will say "I do" with Miss Mary Chapman on the 28th and as might be expected his usher list is studded with familiar names and includes George Neiley, that newspaper tycoon, Dusty Rhode, Bert MacMannis, and those two nervous prospective bridegrooms (getting themselves some pointers), Bill Webster and Dick Jackson. The next day up in Wellesley Hills "Kenny Mac" is to be married to Miss Elenor M. Bancroft, and I think we can expect another Green gathering. Another wedding in the near future will be that of Ray Merrick and Miss Marion Ruth Wells... .we know of no definite date as yet.

WRITER OF THE MONTH Bows this month go to the South and Jake Holland who is down Baltimore way. We'll let Jake speak for himself "I jockeyed around the mills in Syracuse until I got an early break. I was given a few more weeks training in Syracuse, then a few more in Pittsburgh observing the production of stainless steel 'the Crucible way.' Of course I looked up Perry Thomas and had a couple of yammerings with him. He's doing well in Miner's Safety Appliance.... said Bob Bailey was working for Kopper's Co., down in the coal regions of West Virginia and also doing nicely. That's all Perry knew. .. .like the rest of us "Pear" sure settled down nicely. Yours truly located in Baltimore and hopes that it is plenty permanent. I'm selling, and my territory includes North Carolina and the area around Norfolk, Va. While there last week I looked up Ralph Champney and Charlotte and their big complaint was the lack of Dartmouths in that section. At a Dartmouth Club meeting recently I ran into Colin Churchill and Bozo Noland just before he headed for Chattanooga, Atlanta, etc. While at the meeting I heard tell that Bob Achorn is with the Necco Co. in Boston learning how America's sweet tooth is filled No more for the present except that I'd like to see any of the boys who happen to be coming down this way.

THE CLEARING HOUSE This is so long until October, but before closing I have two requests to make. First, is another plea for your support of the ALUMNI FUND DRIVE we are far' behind our quota. We still have another month to go. .. .let's make it 100%. Second, don't forget your Secretary over the summer. .. . there is a large empty file waiting for news.
