The best news in this month's column is that the class has found a new secretary, one qualified by talent and experience to carry on in the footsteps of the beloved Jack Hurd and the immortal Charles Gilson. Like both of them, he comes from a professional background, writes with ease and skill, and has an intimate knowledge of the class of 1921, Dartmouth College, and the Hanover scene.
The man is Joe Folger, for many decades the distinguished professor of French, Spanish, and Portuguese with offices in Dartmouth Hall. Upon Joe's retirement 12 years ago, he and Marion moved back to the ancestral home on Nantucket, where Lois and I had the pleasure of visiting them in June of 1979.
Joe has agreed to try the job only until our 60th reunion next June. The surest way to enlist him for the following five years will be for all of us to keep him plentifully supplied with news. Write Box 1347, Nantucket, Mass. 02554.
In the meantime, Harry Chamberlaine has written the following report on the fall reunion meeting that was held over the Harvard game weekend:
First, there was a much-deserved accolade to Don Sawyer for the great job he did on the Alumni Fund this year. Don was urged to accept, and did accept the job of reunion gift chairman for our coming 60th reunion, with the provision that he could have Bob Burroughs and Ort Hicks to work with him.
Bill Perry reported briefly on the memorial book program and indicated that a most generous Baker Library gift of 466 volumes from our adopted classmates, Lawton andLouise Johnson, will greatly aid our program. Details later.
Our 60th reunion was discussed, and by the time you read this, a letter will have been sent giving preliminary plans and an outline of events. Please do send in the postcard accompanying that letter, if you have not already done so.
It was decided to hold our next fall reunion during the first game of the season the Princeton game, which is scheduled for September 19. And we are attempting to reserve a block of rooms at the Hanover Inn rather than the Holiday Inn at the Junction. More expensive, but certainly more convenient.
