When you come to Beacon Street, Boston (between Park and Somerset), you will naturally head for No. 14 on the sixth floor of which building the Secretary has his office. However on the way be sure to step into Goodspeed's bookstore and ask to see the Matt B. Jones collection of "Rare Americana," which is on sale in that store. The Secretary has before him the catalogue of this collection, which says:
"Matt Jones was a collector of rare discrimination and his bookish interests, though varied, were historically related. He sought the books of certain founders and builders of this nation and the vital narratives of men who fought our wars and planned our political state. His library contained no less than sixty-one items printed in this country during the 17th century and sixty-seven productions from the pens of the Mathers—a notable achievem ent for any collection, whether private or public."
While you're travelling here's hoping that you can get to Hopedale, Massachusetts and have Aubrey Lewis and his wife show you the gardens on which they have been working. Especially let Aubrey exhibit his gladioli on which he is particularly specializing. Get him also to let you eat some of his vegetables.
The word "travel" calls to mind Fred Claggett and his travels in Florida last winter. He discovered a poem of Eddie Grover's on the walls of the Chapel at Rollins College. Also he stopped at Washington and had his picture taken in the company of John Henry Bartlett. It is a distinguished looking picture.
One word leads to another. The Secretary has before him a picture taken in 1919 where Arthur Adams, as Mayor of Spring- field, is welcoming Cardinal Mercier. Arthur in every way looks the part.
The President and the Secretary of the class were together at lunch the other day and recalled that there was an unusual gathering of the officers of the class at the funeral of Ernest Ham. Not only were the two aforementioned there but also Vice President Claggett and Treasurer Ames. Ernest's obituary is in another column.
You can imagine why the President and Secretary were together. It was to talk about the annual round-up before the Harvard game. That comes October 17 th. Last year fourteen were present. This year we ought to have at least twenty. Details as to place and other arrangements will go out shortly.
