Gene Markey '18 who, in a recent brief autobiography which he entitled Something for Nothing, wrote "1917.—In April I left college and set off jauntily for the war," left Hollywood in September for Balboa, C.Z., to enter service in the U.S. Navy. He is a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve.
Something for Nothing appeared in the Battle Creek (Mich.) Enquirer-News as the result of the proddings of one of its columnists for news on a home-town product. Wrote Gene Markey, "This phrase seems rather aptly to sum up my alleged career. For, out of what I am sure is a small talent I have had a large life. It has enabled me to see, and be part of, the glittering threecornered world of New York, Europe and Hollywood; it has dropped a lot of money in my hat; and allowed me to know an incredible array of people. Truly, I have had Something for Nothing."
After admitting that in twelve years he has had only six weeks' vacation, the writer ends his chronological story on the home-town boy who made good with the following brief items:
"1932.—1 married my favorite actress, Joan Bennett.
"1934.—I went to Naples to write a novel, His Majesty's Pajamas. Naples was enchanting, but the novel wasn't. I am sure that only the publisher and myself read it.
"1939.—I married my favorite actress, Hedy Lamarr.
"1941.—My favorite actress is Baby Sandy."
