THE POSSIBILITY OF JOINING a mountain unit of the U. S. Army was opened to draftees and volunteers on October 31 with the announcement that the Army had or dered the creation of the First Battalion, 87th Infantry Mountain Regiment (Reinforced), to be activated November 15 at Fort Lewis, Washington.

Men with mountaineering experience are especially eligible for this battalion, and those with skiing ability may also apply. Reserve or regular officers with mountaineering ability are qualified for immediate service. Selectees under 28 now in service and those over 28 but willing to enlist after being discharged because of age are eligible for transfer to mountain units upon completion of the 13-weeks' basic training course and provided their records warrant such a transfer. Individuals who volunteer for service although they are not liable to be drafted must complete the 13weeks' basic training before they are eligible for service with mountain units.

Dartmouth men interested in the mountain units of the U. S. Army should communicate with John Rand, Assistant Manager of the Dartmouth Outing Club, Hanover, N. H., who has application questionnaires which must be filled out.
