In turning to a history of athletics at Dartmouth, we find the name of Fred G. Folsom '95 as coach of football from 1903 to 1906, inclusive, and also learn that he was "for three years a fighting lineman on Green teams," from 1892 to 1894. Those were the days of the "flying wedge," and a general style of play that depended upon rugged weight, strength and "sheer grit." Mr. Folsom, after graduation, coached several successful football teams at the University of Colorado, and in 1903 he was invited to return to Hanover as Dartmouth's coach. He carried on his coaching career in conjunction with his work on the Law School faculty at Boulder, being in Hanover only during the fall season. It was during his years as Dartmouth coach that a new, open type of play replaced the old "mass play." Football became a game of speed, skill and technique, and it was between the 1905 and 1906 seasons that the forward pass became a prominent feature of offensive play.
