It seems as if we're finally getting settled down. Fewer address changes are coming through, and seemingly few changes in jobs. I'll be changing mine soon for one in the army, and you can expect some new columnists to take over. Bob Reno is going to do the April column, so you can expect anything. Nick Bielanowski is selling life insurance in Hanover for the Mutual Life Ins. Co. of N. Y. Leon Canfield is an aviation cadet at Pensacola, and Chet Emerson is a salesman for Sherwin-Williams in Springfield, Mass. Faegre's. now assistant export manager for Insulite Co. in Minneapolis, and apparently happily married, according to Stink, who saw him a few weeks ago. Bob Mussey is at Minnesota Medical School, and Runyon Colie has joined the insurance ranks. He's with the Insurance Co. of North America in Philad elphia. Ben Williams is in advertising with Harold Cabot & Co., Boston, and Phil Sutherland is in New Britain, Conn., with Corbin Screw. Gus Southworth is with Fidelity Union Trust Co. in Newark, and Tom Roberts has been transferred to the Eastman Kodak Stores in Philadelphia. Warren King is a teacher and coach at Garden City High School, and Charles Hathaway is with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Hartford.
Here's love again. Jack (what else is there but love) Scarbrough is engaged to Elizabeth Richer, U. of California '41. Jack is with Douglas Aircraft in Santa Monica, after having gotten his M. E. in aeronautics from Stanford last year. Joe Van Denburg sent a fine picture of himself and lovely wife from Fort Lauderdale. Got his M.S. at Columbia, married Edith Anne Whelan December 7th, and is now manager of the Miami Herald's Broward county bureau, handling news. Jim Carpenter, who's been invisible for some time, has turned up with an announced engagement to Mary Jane Purrington, Mt. Holyoke and Westfield, Mass. As for the wandering Dave Bradley, he's at the U. of Wisconsin now. Ed Grace has been wandering around this section of the country, but so far we've missed connections. Emlen was here for a hectic week-end. He's joined some smart Philadelphia cavalry troop, and expects to hit the tent-flaps in a few weeks. Saw Bob Chickering at Indiana U. where he's doing some teaching, taking a degree, and proctoring a dorm full of Hoosiers, besides working on some political surveys. Walls writes from Los Angeles, "Archibald was down from Frisco and we spent our time over a flowing bowl of eggnog Christmas afternoon and evening. He hasn't changed. .. .no marriage prospects." I'd say that was some change. He used to have a few prospects but he couldn't do anything about it. Bud reports the New Year's week as a succession of Rose Bowl game, Wilshire Bowl, Victor Hugo, Brown Derby, Earl Carroll's, Palm Springs, Arrowhead, etc., and looking forward to a quiet peaceful life of bankruptcy. He's been promoted to Connecticut Mutual's Los Angeles agency manager.
The American Ski Annual 1940-41 contains an article "Twilight and Frost" by Dave Bradley. Jim Briggs is now with W. R. Grace in New York, bringing the full complement there to five, including Hull, Pickering, Mayne, and Feakins. Johnny Llewellyn was married February 8 th, and Borneman was one of the ushers.
That's all the details I have now. The girl's name is Alice Blair. Dick Lewis is still the bright star of Edgar P. Lewis & Sons, manufacturing confectioners in Maiden, and he says, "I really feel old now with a daughter, Sandra, eight months old and two years of married life behind me. Since one lousy Canuck nearly wrote my doom last winter while playing hockey I haven't done much of anything in the way of sports." Roland Moody writes to say that he's a Library Fellow at Queens College, New York and doing graduate work at the school of Library Service, Columbia, and married Ethel Corwin August 20, 1939. Says that John Coleman is at the Episcopal Theological School at Harvard, and Lou Fortuna studying law at Georgetown and working in the Dept. of the Interior. Mattimore expects to hit the armed forces soon, and reports that Tompkins, MacNutt, and Ed Kirby have already gone. Says he's not only on the wagon, but that he's driving it. New Year's Day was the day to announce Walt Dunlap's and Barbara Armstrong's engagement. Also announced was that of John Knight and Pauline Schmidt of Pasadena and Pomona College. John studied business administration at Pomona, getting his degree in '39. He's now with the Bank of America in Los Angeles.
Bob Blees was married January 14th to Dorothy Robinson of Salt Lake City and Beverly Hills. Also engaged were Hank Molloy and Mary Margaret Meckel, Maryville College. Hank is in his last year at Yale Law. Al Foley gave the talk that went with the last Boston dinner. Fud Mather is with New England Tel. and Tel. as Traffic Supervisor. It seems like I might have started off a mild firecracker by the list of '3B Who's Who at the end of each .article, and I'll quote the leading exponents of both camps, who for the present prefer to remain in anonymity. "Those records are so far behind that I get a sneaking suspicion that by the time you get to "R" I'll once again be in line for the title of the "oldest living graduate east of South Underwear, Idaho." As a matter of fact, one honourable member of our class told me that his son Philbert would be a freshman at our Alma Mater by the time you got to his name. Fill in with ads, or scantily dressed women, but cut out the filing system." The other school says, "Many thanks for the listings. It gives me a chance to bring my year book up to date." You figure it out, but in the meantime, we'll cut out the stuff. I'm sorry I have to leave the column for a while, but it will give you a breathing spell. Send me pictures for my tent flap.
