A phone conversation with Fred Doane on a sultry summer morning conjured up images of the Dartmouth golf course, where I got my first and only experience with a skier's rope tow. Fred was part of the crew of student teachers and ski patrollers intent on having us (and most of us did) graduate to the Dartmouth Skiway. Fred loved the work to the point that he moved over to Stratton Mountain after college and taught black diamond wanabees for 40 years. (I stick to the blue, sorry). In summer Fred took up apple growing near his residence in East Dorset, eventually operating his own orchard of Macintoshes and Cortlands. Fred is retired from apples, but the good news is you can still find him teaching turns at Stratton. Summers, he breeds roses and enjoys his granddaughter, Erin, who lives near Boston.
Another retiree, Chuck Goldthwaite, has opted for golf, which he can't help because he and Mary built a house in Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, Arizona, alongside six (count 'em) Jack Nicklaus-designed courses. It's been a banner year for the Goldthwaites, what with 39 (count em) years of marriage celebrated and a Hawaiian marriage for son Brad, a Portland, Oregon, film producer. Daughter Ashley lives nearby with granddaughter Holli. A Worcester, Massachusetts, native, Chuck learned the advertising business with Benton & Bowles in New York and then spent much of his career in executive positions in personal-care products with Cheseborough-Ponds and S.C. Johnson & Son, also known for wax. Chuck retired in 1993 and now concerns himself with chairing the Desert Foothills Musicfest, the largest classical music festival in Arizona.
Greg Gates, a former Indiana M.D., also retired at Desert Mountain, according to a Dartmouth Medical School alumni report. Greg and Valerie have four sons and seven grandchildren. Greg Prince will call it quits in June after 15 years as president of Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. He plans to move back to Norwich, Vermont, where his wife, Toni, owns a riding academy. Greg was formerly an associate dean and professor of history at Dartmouth.
No retirement just yet for Rick Braddock, who no sooner stepped down from the chair of Priceline when he became a director of Fresh Direct, a fast-growing online fresh food manufacturing and delivery service based in New York. Rick is also chair of Mid Ocean Partners, a New York and London-based private equity firm.
Michael Moriarty joined a dynamic cast for the acclaimed The 4400, a sci-fi series about the return of alien abductees that aired last summer on USA. Michael played Orson Bailey, a 60-something insurance agent enraged by what happened to his wife and business while he was gone.
Kudos to Jim Friedman, named to "Ohio Super Lawyers," based on a peer evaluation process conducted by Law & Politics Magazine; to Bruce Baggaley, honored by Wearers of the Green for being a National Masters singlesculls champ; and to John W. Chamberlain for a State Department Award for Excellence for service in China.
