A Wah-Hoo-Wah!
March 1941 S. C. H.

LEWIS PARKHURST was elected trustee in 1908, thirty years after graduation. In the subsequent thirty-three years he has been a leading member of the Board and has continuously carried committee assignments of vital importance. In his first year as a trustee he was a member of the committee on finance, of which the name was changed in 1911 to the committee on business administration. He was chairman of that important committee every year through 1920. At that time the name of the key group in the governing board was changed to executive committee, of which in turn Mr. Parkhurst has been chairman during the subsequent 21 years.

Thus in thirty-three years of trustee service he has been a member, and for thirty years chairman, of the committee most concerned with the day-by-day affairs of the College. For several years beginning in 1926 he was associated with Trustees H. B. Thayer '79 and M. C. Tuttle '97 on the important committee of the Board studying the new library.

This record is factual but it is not dry. Between each of the lines could be written a story of thought, time, energy .... hoping, ing, dreaming, planning .... never ceasing to strive and work for the betterment of Dartmouth College. Mr. Parkhurst will be 85 this summer. Dartmouth has always been constantly in his thoughts, and the College has constantly been the object of his good works. In this life-long devotion he has been joined by Mrs. Parkhurst. Together, they have made innumerable trips to Hanover. Together, they have generously shared success in life by meeting major needs of the College.

Edward K. Robinson '04, treasurer of Ginn & Co. and long-time associate of Mr. Parkhurst's in that firm, is the author of a splendid biographical sketch of the Senior Trustee in this issue.

If anyone ever deserved a full-throated Wah-Hoo-Wah, shouted from the hearts of Dartmouth men, it is Lewis Parkhurst '78.
