In the total roll of '76, numbering one hundred and seven, thirty-four were born elsewhere than in New England. Present records, including the thirteen survivors of the class, give the final location of fifty-six members as outside of New England. There was no pronounced tendency of graduates .of Dartmouth to leave New England for business or residence till after the Civil War, but conditions arising out of it were an important occasion of the new movement westward. In the class of '61, Pres. Tucker's class, with a total membership of ninety-three, there were thirtyseven who located outside of New England. This class seems to be fairly representative of classes in the fifties. In the class of 1801, Daniel Webster's class, with a membership of thirty graduates and two non-graduates, ten members located outside of New England. Every member of this class was born in New England.
