86s Park Square Bldg., Boston, Mass. Morrill, desiring a little gray home in the West, has bought part of the George Westinghouse ranch near Tucson, Arizona. I have looked at a National Geographic Society map of that region and find that it is dotted with nat. mon. So you can think of Albert as sitting on the porch and admiring the mountains and then getting a fresh $75. horse from the remuda and setting out to visit another nat. mon.
I will now tell you my hypothesis about the Colorado River and related subjects: When a river deposits sediments on an area which is already heavy enough, it becomes too heavy and sinks, so instead of getting a bunch of sand as you might expect, you are likely to get a large hole like the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico etc. As the area sinks, a wedging process results, and readjustments in the earth's crust have to be made somewhere. The Colorado River has already removed enough land from Arizona and roundabout to fill the Gulf of California several times over, but the Gulf of California is not filled up. Accordingly, parts of California and the floor of the Pacific Ocean in that vicinity are moving northwards. The Mexican boundary was shifted fifteen feet by the earthquake of May 18, 1940, and over a long period the land has moved twenty-three miles. When the Colorado River shall have worn down its bed to sea level, the salt water will run up and bathe the bottom of the Grand Canyon. You can already sail an ocean steamship up the Amazon for about 2700 miles,—if you have the steamship.
