31 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, N. Y.
Things seem to be happening fast and furiously among the fellows in our class and we will bring you up to date on the activity as well as our records and those of the bureau in Hanover can record them.
I don't know how many of you fellows remember Jack Sutherland who played Freshman football with the Class of 31—a big rugged-looking blonde. Parker Soule saw Jack at West Point in the summer of '3l trimmed down to a neat 198 pounds and straight as the proverbial ramrod. Jack has gone a long way in military service and at the present time is probably the Class's highest ranking officer in the Army Air Corps. He was at Hanover in 1927-28 with us as a freshman. In June of 1928 he received his appointment to the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, whence he graduated in 1932. His first assignment was with the Army Air Corps at Langley Field, Va., as a Lieutenant, with a bombardment group. He has since been married, and is the proud papa of a boy, John (born March 11, 1936) and a girl (born in August 194.1). Following his service at Langley Field, Jack w.as moved to the Army Base at Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands, where he stayed for two years. He came back to the States in 1939 and was stationed at Maxwell Field, Alabama. Then he was moved again to Langley, where he was promoted to Captain. As such he moved to Westover Field in Massachusetts in June, 1941, when that base was completed. Most recently a postcard was received from Lt. Colonel Sutherland, which is a rank well up the line. Congratulations, Jack!
Since the military is uppermost in the minds of all of us, here are the most recent changes of the fellows in the service: A hasty scrawl from Ben Carrington says he is leaving his law practice in Chicago to take his training with the Naval Air Corps at Quonset, Rhode Island, his title being Lieutenant, Junior Grade. A notation from a publication of the National Office Management Association offers its good luck to Al Noyes, of Oneida, Ltd:, who has joined the colors.
After reading a recent newspaper announcement of Bill Schuldenfrei's engagement, I got the impression that he was at Fort Dix, but after a telephone conversation with his secretary, I have just found out that he is at Officers Training School at Camp Meade in Baltimore. I am sorry I didn't know of this sooner because I just returned from a visit to Camp Meade where my own brother is located. I hope you will look him up, Bill.
ROSY Rosenthal is also parading around in an army uniform at Fort Dix. Ed Mecutchen, formerly stationed at Langley Field in Virginia, has been transferred to the Administration Division of National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in Cleveland, Ohio. Also in the service of the Government but not specifically in the Army is Professor Went Eldredge, on leave of absence from Hanover for the second semester, now located in Washington doing some special work for the Department of Justice (not FBI) as an Associated Organizations Analyst in the Special Defense Unit. Rumor has it that Went will be away "for the duration."
Johnny Chamberlin, formerly with Talon, Inc., Meadeville, Pa., has returned to these here now parts and is associated with the Sperry Gyroscope Co. Almost at the same time we heard that Red Chamberlin was in New York on some special work for the office of price administration. Bill Wilson told us one on Red which I don't believe he will mind our repeating. It seems that Red arrived in New York on the night of the big Dartmouth Dinner and decided to stop at the Dartmouth Club to grab a bite to eat. He was quite surprised at the lack of attendance in the dining room and finally his amazement got the best of him. He inquired of the waiter why so few men were about, only to be told that it was the night of the Dartmouth Dinner and that all the boys were over at the hotel. Red was disappointed but went over to the dinner later on, where Jack Warwick (who I can assure you is growing no more hair himself) reports that Red is even more bald than he is. The only reason I can figure out for Jack's glee is that he has found somebody with less hair than he has. There was a good '31 turn-out at the dinner, including Red Gristede, Dutch Holland, Medico Hugh Neely, Vic King, Vic Rockhill, Nick Nichols, Sammy Groves and Johnny Camph.
The following week we had a little mixed party here in New York and later took in the Dartmouth-Columbia basketball game, our only regret being that there weren't more there because we had a swell time and saw a fine game. Harriet and Shep Wolff, Nini and Jack Warwick, Edna and Bill Wilson, your Secretary and his wife, Frank McCord, Hank Richmond, Charlie Simonson and Johnny Camph all took in the game, while Red Gristede, Charlie Mumma and Ed Maas attended the dinner only.
It seems that every time you see Hank Richmond his card shows a new promotion and this time it is president of the Potdevin Machine Company in Brooklyn. Congratulations again, Hank.
A recent note from Sey Burge on an enticing postcard from Sun Valley reports, "Nothing like this for a honeymoon. A great life for a doctor, particularly with no phones to answer and lots of Hanover people about." We don't have any more dope about his bride, but we hope to have it soon.
And finally, we have a news release from the Farm Credit Administration in Springfield, Mass. to the effect that Wes Dingman has been elected assistant secretary of the Springfield Bank for Cooperatives. Congratulations to you, Wes.
And now fellows, a final plug for Red Gristede and his Alumni Fund. Be sure to get your checks in early.
