Apparently everybody writes to the Class I reasurer (along with the dues), and nobody writes to the Class Secretary. So, thanks to Bill Schuldenfrei, some of these notes are sent along for immortalizing in the column. If you enjoy reading about the doings and whereabouts of other '31ers, then it's not vanity to believe that they'd enjoy getting some news about you. Occasionally, one of the longtime-ago familiar names pops up in public print; but, generally, most of our accomplishments and/or malefactions aren't widely newsworthy. By the nature of things, we don't have many opportunities for personal gettogethers with more than three or four '31ers in any particular locality.
This column is not for the use of the College or for your Secretary, it's for you. It would be swell if each of you would decide that here's, the easy way to write a personal note to a few hundred classmates. It would make the column more interesting and would cut down the wear and tear on my longsuffering secretary, too.
NEWS
It won't come as a surprise to anybody who saw him operate between '27 and '31, but it's good to get the news that JohnnyMartin was elected Auditor General of the State of Michigan. Johnny polled almost 900,000 votes, with more than a 100,000 plurality over his opponent. One of these days, we'll be writing to and about John B. Martin Jr., Governor of the State of Michigan.
Spence Miller, first vice-president of the Maine Central Railroad, was State Chairman of the Payroll Savings Bond Campaign. How about giving us a blow-by-blow on the Miller doings, Spence? Bob Oelman has been elected to the Board of Directors of the National Association of Manufacturers. That's no mean accomplishment! A note from his wife says that Frank Merriman spent 14 weeks in a hospital after he and a ladder parted company in mid-air. Howard Crosse has been appointed an Assistant Vice President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. At the same time this word got to me, a two-column picture of him appeared in the Jersey Observer. I've got to assume, Howard, that you haven't had a picture taken recently, because in that photograph you look more like a '51er than a '31er. In case it happens to be a recent likeness, please pass the word along to the rest of us as to how you do it.
AND MORE NEWS
We're always impressed when a letter comes across the desk carrying the seal of the Department of State. This one informs us that Bob Asher has "now returned to the United States" and is living at 3838 Cathedral Avenue, N. W., Washington 16, D. C. When you get a minute, Bob, why not write and tell us where you've been and what you've done?
The Western Connecticut Graduate Association of Phi Beta Kappa was organized last November, and who do you suppose is its President? Why, none other than author, bon vivant and Sachem Orator, Chuck O'Neill. Somewhere in the resounding victory of Vincent Impellitteri in the New York mayoralty race could be seen the fine hand of Vic Herwitz. Vic knows his way around in New York politics dating back to earlier days as Assistant District Attorney in the Rackets Bureau when Governor Dewey was New York County District Attorney. A note from an '18er reports receipt of a post-card from Ireland signed by Walt Hausman. Isn't there something about that European junket you'd be willing to let others see in public print, Walt?
We're sorry to lose Ed Studwell as Class Agent, but we're happy to welcome Bill Benger into that office. It isn't easy, Bill, but it s a lot of fun.
Just a reminder about class dues. There are only a few outstanding five-dollar bills yet due, so let's make it 100% as soon as possible.
