Winter closes in, and except for the Pros, the weekend football festivals are a matter of history. For the class, we can only assume that newsletter editor Walt Darby has documented our comings and goings. Because the Princeton weekend marked our annual fall reunion it might be well to record that our unofficial boxscore listed approximately forty classmates in attendance, making a group of some eighty on the traveling squad. In case Darby missed it, there was a vigorous golf competition on the Lake Morey links which featured a gross low-ball contest. Moose Wyman, LarryVulte, Ted Wolfe and George Hanna finished in a flat tie with Bert MacMannis,Jack Coulson, Bob Loughry, and your scribe. No money passed hands, but big Coulson received the golden tee for the most colorful hole of the round. In the meantime, Walt Darby and Jack Cathcart played a social round with their respective wives. The golf was a reward for the early arrivals who attended an executive committee meeting previous to tee-up time.
A report from your Secretary indicated concern on the part of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE re: the future of class notes, which precipitated a proposal by your committee that the Class Secretaries Association be informed that we preferred the status quo. Sam Thurm's treasurer's report indicated a current balance of $10,124 and an indication that all dues bills were out for the current year. Bob Kaiser, Bequest Chairman, stated that he is mailing a questionnaire to all members of the class, and at the same time reported our progress in the Bequest Program was "about average" for our stage of alumni life. A gift toward our Memorial Books Program, from a parent of the class, prompted the suggestion that Robb DeGraff, our Memorial Chairman, discuss the matter with the Librarian with an eye to coordinating any future gifts with our Books Program. The most protracted discussion centered about our dismal showing in Alumni Fund giving. Dusty Rohde, our Class Agent, confessed that his plan (to keep the 1970 mailings limited in the belief that they served as a annoyance rather than a stimulant) had not performed up to expectations. It was decided to reestablish the "Century" and "Two-Century" Clubs, to isolate potential large givers through the means of a special Major Gifts committee to be chaired by Jack Coulson, and to revert to the traditional intensive follow-up. Finally, it was decided to publish on April 1, 1971, a Special Report to the Class, dealing primarily with fiscal matters, and delineating various accomplishments and projects of our class over the past 31 years.
As a footnote to the Princeton weekend, we acknowledge the last-minute cancellations of plans to be with us of Wolf Naylor and Joe Batchelder: Wolf because of an unfortunate equestrian accident which broke both his legs, and Joe because of a pressing and unexpected trip to Belgium to interview the Minister of Economic Affairs of that country.
