The 1933 Newsletter started off last Spring by saying that Class Agents fall by the way as frequently as ministers in the Balkins. The simile can't very well be used at this time, but another occasion for its use has presented itself with the abdication of Bro. Mackey and his succession by M. W. T. Okie. We have yet to discover the reason for the Mackey resignation—a resignation to which, however, he was amply entitled as a result of the splendid work he did in the course of his management of the 1933 Fund campaigns.
An exhibition of Dantan Sawyer's paintings was held in Boston from March 30th to April 18 th at the Grace Home Galleries, 270 Dartmouth Street. Margaret Bruening writing in the New York Journal-American, had this to say of his work: there is no trace of grim labor or fatigue in his work, but rather an apparent spontaneity and fluency. The artist has obviously liked the things which he has painted and has set down his reactions to them in his own terms which make these New England landscapes alive for us " He has exhibited, among other places, at Metropolitan Museum, Carnegie Institute, Dartmouth College Museum, Youngstown Museum, Worcester Museum, Institute of Modern Art and Rhode Island School of Design.
Another flash on the Mackey menage: "Margaret Edna Mackey was born March 7, 1942 at 9:50 p.m.—Displacement 8 lbs. 11 oz.! She's a doll! Dot is wonderful and came through with flying colors."
From Bill Gillies: "The Dartmouth Club of Western Pennsylvania has their annual dinner on March nth—a very successful affair with Prof. Allen Foley as guest and principal speaker. Prof. Foley went on at great length in his own inimitable style on how the war had affected college life in Hanover. Bill Lang deserves great credit for the untiring effort he has given and continues to give to Dartmouth doings. Many times he has gone out of his way by phone and letter to remind people of the day and hour when a get together will be held.
"When last I heard of Jim De Haven, he was at Bettell Memorial Institute in Columbus. Lee Eckels, the well known lawyer must be keeping up his liberal education because on the only two occasions that I have been in the local lending library in the past half year or so, I met Lee taking out a book.
"I enclose a card about Bob Ellis which came in the mail yesterday. As for myself, I recently joined the Rust Engineering Cos. here in Pittsburgh and it looks like Pittsburgh will be our home for a time to come. When working for U. S. Steel, one can never be too certain. Son W. B. Gillies III is now 2 years old and the stork is expected again any day now—more on that later."
The card mentioned reads as follows: "We are pleased to announce that RobertK. Ellis has been made a member of our firm—Lyman Richie & Cos. 1932 Insurance Exchange, Chicago.
Ensign E. J. Foley Jr. writes from 8.0. Q. Section Base, Bishop's Point, Pearl Harbor, Oahu, T. H.: "Have been out this way a couple of months now and am at present on temporary duty in harbor patrol work pending what I hope may be further transfer.
"Incidentally, to touch upon lesser things, Senator, my pittance for the Fund has gone to Al with a letter offering my services in its behalf on the island."
The Concord News Letter in the Newport Argus Champion heralds the appointment of Bill Starr to superintend the sale of Victory bonds in the State of New Hampshire as a slap at routine, machine politics in Manchester.
