Richard L. Brooks '39 went to sea with the Navy last year and became an ensign. The result was ElmerSquee Goes to Sea, published by Macmillan Cos. in March. The authorartist of the humorous, little tale concerning the adventures in the navy of one "Elmer Squee" of Mildew Center, Vt., related in couplet and cartoon, admits that many of Elmer's adventures are really his own when he was an apprentice seaman on a heavy cruiser.
Ensign Brooks, whose mid-campus snow-sculpture of Eleazar for the '939 Winter Carnival is still remembered, studied sculpture in Boston after leaving Hanover and became a cartoonist for the Boston Transcript. Joining the Navy may not have shown him the World but it did add to his creative store and produce Elmer Squee.
