THE MARITIME COMMISSION has given its approval to the sentiment of Dartmouth alumni for their alma mater by signing a contract with the Globe American Corporation of Kokomo, Ind., for the lifeboats for the Liberty Ship "Eleazar Wheelock."
When Alden P. Chester '21, vice president of the Kokomo company, heard that a Liberty Ship was being named for Dartmouth's founder, he wrote the Commission explaining that he was an alumnus of the College and would like to be sure his lifeboats went on the "Eleazar Wheelock." The Globe American Corporation, recently converted from the manufacture of stoves, had been making lifeboats for many of the Liberty Ships and the Maritime Commission permitted its red tape to acquire a spot of green to indulge the whim of one of its contractors.
