The other day Jack Russell was seated in front of the big fireplace in his base camp at Porters Cover on the southwest Miramichi River in New Brunswick when he was startled by excited shouting on the river directly in front of the camp. As he jumped for the door his first thought was that someone had fallen overboard and his first hope that the fellow could swim!
"But imagine my surprise," he writes, "when I heard Vernon F. West (Dartmouth '09) of Portland, Me., yelling, 'I have him! I have him!'
"He did, in every sense of the word. A salmon had jumped out of the river, right into West's lap, and he came into the canoe without being invited either by a fly or the use of a rod. West's rods were lying idle in the canoe as he was drifting back to camp following a day's fishing. His guide killed the fish and it was added to the day's kill.
"Samson R. Field and William T. Rasmus, both of New York, and Supreme Court Judge Sydney F. Foster, of Liberty, all were witnesses of the event.
