Item One is for readers west of the Mississippi, because, judged by the number of clippings I received, every paper on the east side carried the news that Sam Stratton had accepted the presidency of Middlebury College. Congratulations to our second college president! As you know, Sam left Harvard some time ago to go to Washington with President Hopkins when the latter was serving with the OPM. Sam first served as group executive for the minerals and metals division of the priorities section. In July '4l he became technical consultant to the director of priorities, later became assistant chief of that bureau and in February '42 he was made director of the review division.
I never thought I'd know the president of a railroad, but now we have one in our midst, Carl Newton, recently elected to the presidency of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. Carl is a member of the New York law firm of Donovan, Leisure, Newton and Lombard; formerly was Asst. Attorney-General of New York and Asst. U. S. Attorney. The old prestidigitator is certainly doing himself proud.
How did you like Paul Sample's paintings ings o£ Naval aviation scenes in the January 4 issue of Life magazine? When you can rate six pages of drawings in that mag you're doing all right. With Pabie and Don Mac Donald both associated with Life we're well represented.
Another short on Sherm Adams' latest accomplishments: new commander of his local American Legion Post, Speaker of House of Representatives in New Hampshire, and it wouldn't surprise me if before too many years he was an ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees of the College—with the title of His Excellency.
Swell note received from Bun Harvey stating that he recently saw McGoughran in Boston, also Hutch, down from Exeter. The latter couldn't understand how Andover beat Exeter in football last fall until he found out that the Harvey scion was playing tackle for Andover. Said scion hopes to go to Dartmouth this fall but he will be 18 this month, and you know what that means.
