"Mr. Justice Mahady." Skip Mahady has become an associate justice of the fivemember Supreme Court of Vermont. He was sworn in on August 31 by Gov. Madeleine Kunin.
He writes, "We still live in Middlebury, which we love. But we are thinking of moving soon to the Burlington area—a much easier commute to Montpelier. Our oldest daughter, Tara, goes to school here (in Montpelier) at Rice Memorial, an excellent Catholic high school. There are better 'home office' facilities for me there, etc. I've been actively on the new job for two whole weeks now. So far, so good—really enjoy it."
But don't expect Skip to start getting stuffy on us. Newspaper photographs taken the day of his appointment show his hair collar length—and it was still long when he was sworn in, though an Associated Press account called the ceremony "one of the most formal swearing-in ceremonies in memory before a court chamber packed with about 100 people."
Skip adds that he had received a note recently from Tom Russell "who is the new associate dean at the National Judicial College located at the University of NevadaReno. I've been out there three times, and it is an exciting and very valuable facility for the judiciary of the nation. It is presently in a stage of important transition. Tom, I am sure, has his hands full, but has an opportunity to make a real contribution to the administration of justice in America."
It seems like just yesterday that LarrySills and his wife Susan established the Susan and Lawrence Sills Scholarship., designed to send minority students from New York to Dartmouth, but already a second student has been honored. He is Arthur Edwards '91 of Brooklyn, a graduate of Regis High School, where he was student government treasurer, student council secretary, and earned two letters in track. Miro Reverby '90, of Manhattan was the first winner of the four-year award, which covers half of the cost of a Dartmouth education.
More on Tony Horan's establishment of the North American Urological Institute for improved care of cancer of the prostate. "This will be accomplished via collaboration with A.V. Schally, the Nobel prize winner, and Morris Pollard of Notre Dame, who has developed the best animal model of carcinoma of the prostate in the world." Tony, whose foundation already has IRS approval as a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, says "Contributions to this work are welcome," and adds, "There is a fine piece of journalism to be done which would explore why I must found a new institution to deal with carcinoma of the prostate rather than work with existing institutions."
Sunday surprise: Having a classmate's face stare up at you on a groggy Sunday morning. That's the surprise I got—and many of you got as well—when Dave Birney and Meredith Baxter Birney were on the cover of Parade on October 11, with a story on their marriage and how it has survived 13 years. Parade, of course, is one of the largest magazines in the world, reaching readers in just about every city and town in America. By the way, the two also were featured in a summer advertising campaign by the Israel Government Tourist Office, along with Elliott Gould. The theme: Israel, this year.
