An editorial in the Manchester (N. H.) Leader reads, in part, "As for the Second District, Mr. Adams' popularity was early apparent, and the handsome vote given him is an acknowledgement of his record, well earned, as Speaker of the House in 1943. It also is an excessive avowal that his political career in New Hampshire has just begun. It is an auspicious start." This is a result of Sherm Adams' victory in the New Hampshire primaries for Republican nomination for U. S. Congressman. There were four contestants and Sherm received seventy per cent of all the votes cast. It is my understanding that this district is traditionally Republican, so it appears that we will be represented in Congress next year. Sherm is head of the timberlands department of the Parker-Young Cos., a large paper and lumber concern, and is a director of several local concerns. He has four youngsters: Jean, a student at Simmons College; Sam, six years old; Sally, a student at Northfield Seminary, and Marion, who is studying at the Julliard School of Music in New York. (Remember? Sherm was leader of the Glee Club.)
A 1 Frey has been appointed Deputy Director for the surplus Property Officer of the Treasury Department. This new assignment has to do with disposal of surplus war property. Charlie McGoughran has been laid up since June and has spent some time in the hospital—virus pneumonia and complications were the causes. When last heard from he was nicely on the mend.
Service Items: Bob Dow (the word conies from Phil Gross) was advanced to the rank of captain last spring, one year to the day from the time he was originally commissioned second lieutenant. He is in England, attached to the Army Air Force; he went through his training, and began active service in July, 1943 Direct quote from Jim Parkes' wife: "In August, 1941, Jimmy, who has been in the Naval Reserve since the last war, was called into active service as a lieutenant. A few months later he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander. On July 22, 1944, he received orders to report to General Mac Arthur's headquarters somewhere in the Southwest Pacific. He was one of twenty naval officers chosen to be on the General's Staff."
.... Latest word on Charlie Crathern (also from his wife): "The first of December, 1943, the 15th Air Force was activated with headquarters at Bari, Italy. Charles reached Bari just in time to be there for that terrible bombing on December 2. He has been there most of the time since, except for a trip to Corsica and Sardinia, and this May another trip East —I don't know yet where that took him. He is very careful about what he writes."
The wives are being more than cooperative. Mrs. Wilbur Full away writes: "Lt. Col. Fullaway is head of the American Component of the Statistical Control Section at the Headquarters of the Allied Expeditionary Air Forces 'somewhere in England.' He is rounding out his second year in England, having landed there some time in August, 1942. After serving for over a year at the Headquarters of the 9th Air Force Service Command, Lt. Col. Fullaway was transferred to his present station early last spring, shortly after his promotion to his present rank."
Word from Don Smith gives no record of his present whereabouts but it does show that the military rank we had for him—captain—is out of date. He is now a major in the Air Corps. Lt. Roger Finkbine writes: "Came back into the Navy two years ago August; hung around Detroit and Columbus, Ohio, in Officer Procurement work for a long time; finally was able to get transferred out here and have been tickled to pieces about it ever since. Am on a big carrier (U.S.S. ), in a good job and with a swell bunch of fellows, about eight of whom are Dartmouth men —all much younger, of course." .... From Jake Gorton: "I find myself back in the Navy and flying again. I went to Pensacola for a refresher course. The Navy wanted to see if the old man could still push it! Apparently I satisfied the Bureau of Aeronautics, and I reported to-Jacksonville, Squadron No. 15, as a lieutenant commander. Three months later I was made squadron commander. After a swell year as squadron commander, the "Brass Hat' finally caught up with me; they made me commanding officer at Banana River (Florida) and sat me behind a desk." .... Les Patterson's brother reports that he closed out his oil distributing business in Mankato, Minn., to join the Armed Forces. He is a captain in the Marine Corps, located at Edenton, N. C. .. . . Mrs. Charlie Mills wrote a modest few lines about her husband, "because Mr. Mills is in England and has been there in the Transportation Service over a year. He is a captain and expects to go over to France soon." .... Lt. Cmdr. Ed Taylor is at present on duty as Medical Officer, U. S. Naval Dry Docks, Terminal Island, San Pedro, California.
Capt. Eddie Bowen stopped in the office recently on his way to Paul Smith's. He looks fine and is enjoying his duties in the Marines. He and the family spent the summer on Long Island and Ed commuted to the Brooklyn Navy Yard Lt. Col. Hib Richter is stationed at Topeka, Kansas.
It doesn't seem possible that our 25th Reunion is coming up in June. It certainly is too early to predict whether or not we will have a Hanover Reunion but if possible and the College can take care of us, we'll be there. Reunion or not, we as a class, have our most- important task to accomplish: Namely, the raising of at least $20,000 for the 25th Year Memorial Fund. The class of 1919 turned in 25M and there is no reason we can't raise our quota. At this point only a relatively few have submitted their pledges and consequently there is a long way to go. There is no necessity of making your contribution immediately, but it would be of the greatest help if you would send in your pledge to Stan Newcomer. At best it is difficult to head a money-raising campaign, but with four hundred people spread over the world it is doubly so. The committee feels that practically everyone will make some contribution. Doing it now will be of great assistance.
More than 250 members of the class have sent in something about themselves for the 25 th, Report. We want something from Everybody. Dick Pearson tells me that a few insertions may be made if received before November 1. Are you one of those who will take advantage of this?
