ERNEST SMALL, 1910's famous Fighting Rear Admiral, is taking a much needed rest at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital after a war-long tour of duty in the Pacific which included some time on Admiral Nimitz' staff as an interlude between his command of the old heavy cruiser , fondly known as "Sway- back," and resumption of fighting as head of a heavy cruiser division. Ernie chafing under the enforced rest allows that "the old carcass could not take it"; is anxious to get back in the Pacific. In World War I he saw plenty of destroyer action—and again in this war he led destroyers until placed in command of the which made naval history off Savo Island by sinking some nine Jap warships that were headed for Guadalcanal. He got the Navy Cross for "aggressiveness and determined action and skill and devotion to duty."

After being made Rear Admiral and placed in charge of the big cruisers, he commanded them in the bombardment of Wake Island, again in the Gilberts and Marshalls campaigns, at the initial Palau raid, and lastly the task group that bombarded the Kuriles in June .... so it is not easy for him to be taking the rest cure right now.

Interestingly enough, Ernie writes that a young doctor who has been most kind in looking after him is Lt. (jg) Bob Unangst, Dartmouth '40 and son of our Ernest, who is completing his internship at the Naval Hospital after getting his medical degree at N. Y. U.

Clarke Tobin very kindly went over to Brooklyn and had a grand visit with Ernie, writing, "He is- a fine man .... a small, lean sea dog of the first order. He told me to call him Ernie, and not Admiral which made a hit with me. He spoke of many boys in the class and wanted to be especially remembered to Walter Norton who gave him a job in the Grill, something which he always appreciated. We had a grand visit, and I hope to see him again. There is no doubt but that he retains a great and sincere affection for our Dartmouth."

Russ PALMER and wife vacationed in Maine, visited the Fosters in Portland, after having been to Hanover for first time in years .... all hands looked forward to our Reunion Harold Marsh has moved to 175 Lincoln St., Manchester, N. H., operates a warehouse at 141 Massabesic St.... Noah Foss visited Horace Chadbourne at Glacier Park this summer Harry Sandberg lives in Chicago, lunched recently with Lew Williams, Paul Albert and Mac Kendall Ralph Abercrombie's address is 49 Lowell St., Methuen Ted Smith claims Varadero Beach, Cuba, is "most beautiful beach on this continent," ordered Dartmouth-Columbia game tickets for his daughter, Mrs. B. Solis, who lives in New York, sees Kid Fowler occasionally on the latter's visits to Havana Ed Loveland has moved to his retirement farm in Stowe, Vt., but is still active as Extension Dairyman for U.V.M.

INKY TAYLOR has moved to 1516 Mt. Eagle Place, Alexandria, Va., is at Room 3623 Dept. of Justice, Washington, where he is with the Claim Division of U. S. District Court which supervises all U. S. District Court litigation throughout the country excepting matters such as patents, admiralty, etc., which fall into special sections .... his division sends men to try cases in the field when importance or novelty of the issues warrant it. Inky gets a great kick out of the purely legal work after having been for years in problems that were truly more administrative.

Don Palmer's daughter Dorothy was married August 29 to Lt. (jg) Wilson Blackwell Partridge, U. S. Naval Reserve.

IN JULY and again recently we spent evenings with our old roommate, Eddie Daley and his family in Detroit. He weighs some more than when he earned Harry Hillman's classification as "the hardest hitting end Dartmouth ever had" but otherwise is the same Eddie. He wanted to be remembered to Walter Norton, Clarke Tobin, Larry Bankart and dozens of others whom he knew well in 1910.

FL-ETCH BURTON is out to make another splendid showing in collecting class dues this year so that he can add to the surplus he has started. .... Fletch as Rhode Island Fuel Administrator and head of his own sizable business, is a mighty busy man .... so any help you can give him in prompt payment will be welcomed heartily.
