The summer passes too quickly. It seems that long before we've finished half of the promises we made last spring, it's time to start an entirely new list for fall. Well, maybe next summer. ... We've received a lot of mail during the recess. Here is what's happening:
Charlie and Charlotte Buchanan have gone to the mat with the bursar's office, but to no avail. There is no volume discount. This year there will be four Buchanans ensconced in Hanover — Mike '80, Doug '81, David '82, and Clara '83.
Dave Horlacher has been elected to the board of trustees of Susquehanna University for a five- year term. He is still a professor of economics at the University. His wife Marie is a banker. Dave still plays Marine on weekends.
Dick McCostis has joined the New York law firm of Lunney & Crocco. He will continue to practice domestic and international corporate law. For the past six years he was counsel to International Paper Company. Before that, he was general counsel and secretary of American Export Industries and a director of American Export Isbrandtsen Lines. Dick graduated from University of Virginia Law School in 1960.
Fred and Thelma Stephens and David are back in the U.S.A. and feeling very much at home. They are at 65 Glen Street, Dover, Mass., 02030.
Bob Nessen has become counsel to the Boston law firm of Fine & Ambrogne.
Andy Sigler was elected to the board of directors of Chemical New York Corporation and its primary subsidiary, Chemical Bank. Andy continues to chair the board and serve as chief executive officer of Champion International Corporation.
Barry and Ginger Schoder wrote about the marvelous time they had in Hanover for the graduation of their son Andy. Details of the '53 reception and dinner .will be in the newsletter. An interesting note: the bagpipers who have led every graduation parade since our class's have finally retired; this was their finale.
Denny and Yvonne Speidel have returned from Belgium. Denny is with Control Data, so the homestead has been relocated to the Minneapolis suburb of Edina. They are glad to be back and to be united with their whole family.
Mayo and Julie Johnson's son Ken will be in Hanover with the class of '83.
Bobby Douglass wrote that Dave Florence, Gerry Grady, Jack Patten, and all of their families had their own reunion picnic this summer at Dave's house. All are well and seem to be surviving work, inflation, parenthood, etc.
Just in case you missed it elsewhere, Dick Lombard, an alumni trustee of the College, will chair the major gifts committee of the Campaign for Dartmouth. He relieves Sandy McCulloch '50, who included this with his responsibility chairing the Campaign until now.
Don't forget our big reunion plans for this fall. On October 13, there will be a cocktail party at Sallie and Marty DeGennaro's in Woodbridge after the Yale game. And on October 20 at Harvard, there will be a brunch before the game at Carol and Ken Snell's. The big weekend will be Dartmouth Night in Hanover on October 26 and 27. The game is Cornell. Make reservations at the Norwich Inn, which we have taken over completely, or the Sheraton Inn in West Lebanon. On November 3 at Columbia, there will be a party after the game at Carol andDick Kochman's. Brown will come to Hanover on November 10; post-game cocktails will be up at Nancy and Bill Johnson's house.
That's it for this month.
