Freddie Carroll, as president of the Boston Alumni, has just held what everybody acknowledges was the outstanding dinner within memory. Freddie did a perfectly outstanding job in handling the group and was ably assisted by interesting speakers. The Class of 'O9 came across with twenty-five people present. The people attending were as follows: Curly Blake, Herbe Hawes, Wally Ross, Curt Hilliard, Bob Holmes, Joe Worthen, Plum Leighton, Mike Farley, Art Swenson, Bill Loughlin, Dan Watson, Chet Brett, Gordon Weinz, Cad Cummings, Ben Scully, Norm Catharin, Bob Stone, Allen Newton, Sandy Hooker, Dick Lord, Arthur Stanley, Jim Hitchcock, Freddie Carroll, Harry Floyd. Curt Sheldon was to be present to receive the cup but was unable to attend, so I carried the cup to the dinner so that all present could see it. A baby's head is engraved on one side o£ the cup and on the other side the following inscription: DARTMOUTH ..1909.. Presents this trophy to that member who, despite advancing years, has so pregnantly demonstrated his virility.
1943—Curtis Sheldon
I am sorry to report that Russell Alvord died on November 3, 1943. Russ had been confined to bed for about two years with heart trouble and even before that was obliged to take particular care of himself. Further details regarding him will be found in the obituary notice.
Hap Hinman sent me a notice that Ed Meleney took part in the Symposium on War and Post-War Tropical Medicine at the 39th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine held in Cincinnati. He also stated that Chan Baxter of Tacoma, Washington, read in the 'O9 notes that Moffatt's daughter was in social service in Tacoma, so he called and introduced himself and had a very pleasant visit with her.
There seems to be a general feeling that the class should get together at some hotel around the middle of June to spend a weekend that would in some way take the place of our 35th Reunion which we will be unable to hold this year because of the war. Art Swenson has suggested the Farragut Hotel at Rye Beach. It is only a short distance from Portsmouth, is on the water with a golf course connected with it. It can be reached by train s6 that gasoline will not have to be used by anyone who feels that he has not the gasoline available this year. Ben Dudley suggests a weekend either in Boston or New York. If we have such a party, we should begin to make arrangements very shortly. We will hold a meeting of the executive committee to go into the matter and you will undoubtedly hear from us very soon. If you have any suggestions, we will be very glad indeed to receive them.
Steve Holmes, son of Bob and Harriet, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. This is most extraordinary when you consider the time and effort that he has given to athletics during his college course. Bob and Harriet certainly have every right to be proud of him.
