MAY 1969 ROGER M. BURY, SAMUEL Z. WORMSER

I'm on a plane Newark-Harrisburg wondering what I can tell you're '27, that stalwart and sometimes partially mute class. The great '69-'27 event was scheduled to occur four days after these maunderings must be filed in Hanover town. Not being blessed with foresight, I can only tell you now that Don McCall is most ebullient about the (now) coming event ten days or more away, some 50 guys and gals have indicated that April 9 will find them at the New York "D" Club. They are to hear McCall ask Bury to pinch-hit for Mullin as M.C. Howie, unfortunately, will miss this event being grounded that week in Chicago. I will give Gus Cummings opportunity to relieve his fiscal tensions by telling us about them. Sam Wormser is to take a well earned bow, whereupon your Secretary will present '27's educator with the widest audience (confidentially in his field he is real tough competition for Life Magazine's educational films). Hank Murray will produce evidence of how he mines gold with film, travel, and much research into early history.

The torch will then be passed to that eminent barrister, sailor, author, photographer and once in a while, Irishman - '27's recent winner of the Alumni Award, CharleyBartlett. He will, from years of intimate association, present the "Doane Arnold" story, '27's Man of the Year. As to just how Doane will defend himself under these not too trying circumstances will be discovered then, but I will predict it will be with the bright - shining - pointed sword of humor. Next month I will tell you how it was.

You all have heard of the April Alumni Seminar in Hanover. I hope '27 is represented and open these columns to a report of something I wish I could attend.

John Machen from Baltimore says grandchild no. 3 expected this month in Monterey, Calif., where son-in-law Lt. Joseph Corcoran is attending Navy Graduate School.

Art Keleher, Florida Regional Chairman, got a report from a new constituent, GordonHope. Hopie writes, "Yep, I retired as of Jan. 15 so we are Florida residents now (St. Petersburg) and enjoying the place we built in '57 and only got to use about six weeks a year. Certainly appreciate the golf invitation Art, but didn't even bring clubs. Gave it up in favor of boats. Have a small inboard-outboard job here and would like to get you out in it. Had a barrage of company my daughter and grandchildren Gordon Chase, 13, and Sandra 10, were here two weeks from Peabody, Mass. Weather was lousy with big L. Heard from FredThompson, old Richardson roommate, who was in Puerta Vallerta, Mexico. He has had a ranch in Wagon Mound, N. Mex., now out to pasture like us. Great though — isn't it?" Thanks for news even second-hand. Incidentally, what's Fred Thompson's address?

Spence Cook spent winter in Scottsdale, Ariz. Talked to Len Dunn in Mesa, says a get-together will be postponed till next year. "Scottsdale is scenic, livable and delightful climate" says Spence. Incidentally, note the "how busy I am" key which all retirees seem to latch on to, promptly. A year from now, I will indicate whether I too can qualify - hope so.

Coggy Broer and Sue, after two weeks in Grand Cayman, regret that a meeting in Los Angeles and two in San Francisco conflict with Doane's night, says, "I'm glad that Doane is being honored —he deserves it."

Si Morand — "Have little news at this time but I note Gordon Smith's drawing makes you a mighty 'wigg-ed' secretary!" Al Chabot - "Just got over a siege of pneumonia in the hospital where my roommate turned out to be D'17 - Don Litchard - a friend of Doane coincidentally" - hope all is back to normal, Al.

Reg Horton writes that he is retiring. Believe it or not, Reg is 70 and served a stint with the Canadian Army in World War I. He has two children. "Our son, Class of 1955 is a well adjusted Phi Beta, earned his master's at U. of Penn. Our daughter also was valedictorian at Middlebury and a Phi Beta after which she went to Harvard for her Master's, and after teaching for a spell, married and is now living in Acton, Mass." Quite a heritage, Reg—and our best for a happy and rewarding retirement.

The Dartmouth Alumni Award to Charles W. Bartlett, which I'm sure you read about in the last ALUMNI MAGAZINE, went to a most deserving guy and all of his classmates join in "Bravo — Congratulations — Well done." Charlie and Barbara are off early summer to visit son Sam in the Philippines and will come home via Ireland where they will co-host a rendezvous for Irish Royal Cruising Club and Cruising Club of America. The Burys aboard "Passagemaker" may be able to bend schedule and attend. Incidentally, since this will be about as extensive an undertaking as we have ever bitten off, maybe I should report that we, with four others, two who are retired captains USN, will leave Norfolk, May 25, for Charleston, S. C. — from there Bermuda, Azores — Ireland — then hopefully, Scotland and across to the Baltic. By repeating this schedule frequently enough, I just won't have nerve enough to call it off. Will report highlights next fall.

Bill Cusack in Deerfield Beach, Fla., refers to real estate complexities and says, "Caution is still the word."

Next time, full details on Doane Arnold night.
