DURING THE PAST MONTH the School has lost one member of its staff to Selective Service, Paul S. Staples Jr. '44, who has been instructor in mechanical engineering since last November, when he received his degree from Thayer School. Paul left Hanover early in May to report for induction.
Scholarship problems at Thayer School after the war will be very substantially eased by a bequest of the late John Sanborn Conner '65. The income from this bequest to the College has been designated for use as a loan fund for deserving -Thayer School students and increases greatly the funds available for this purpose.
The School has recently received a bequest of one thousand dollars from the estate of Ray T. Gile '79. The use of this gift is unrestricted and it is planned to add it to the endowment of the School, using the income for general expenses.
Dean Garran and I were fortunate enough to be included on the mailing list for a letter which 800 Hayden '4l, lieutenant USNR, and wife Betts distributed some little time ago to members of TS '4l from their quarters at 438 Lee St., Oakland (10), California. 800 included several remarks about California which will be omitted here in line with our good neighbor policy but which constituted an enthusiastic approval of New England. He works at the Naval Air Station at Alameda where he is Production Officer for the Aircraft Overhaul Division. Betts works part-time for a local newspaper and judging from Boo's enthusiastic remarks must spend the remaining twenty-four hours cooking for the old man.
Apparently "Beak" Estabrook '41, lieutenant USNR, who is stationed at the Naval Air Station at Tongue Point, has a son by the name of Kent, but since we have not been included on his mailing list, if any, no further information is available. This situation might easily be rectified, Beak.
Good reports have been received from some of the V-12ers who left here in February for boot training at Camp Peary. They will probably have completed this training by the time this letter appears and will have been assigned to new duties with their ensign stripes.
An article has just come to my attention in the November issue of Southwest Builder andContractor, which was written by Samuel Hobbs '13, Field Engineer for the Portland Cement Association. This article is an abstract of a paper presented by Mr. Hobbs at a joint meeting of the Southern California American Institute of Architects and Structural Engineers Association. It is a comprehensive review of recent developments in concrete design and construction and the significance of these developments to concrete practice during the post-war period.
A good letter received some time ago from Jim Skinner '43, ensign (CEC) USNR gave his address at that time as Port Huinimi, California. Jim was one of five officers with a Construction Battalion Maintenance Unit and expected to be shipped out before too long, as he no doubt has been in the meantime.
Steve Horner '44, F 1/C USNR visited the School last month on his way to Northwestern University where he will enter Midshipmen's School. Since leaving Thayer School, Steve has studied at Wentworth Institute and at a specialized air-conditioning school in York, Pennsylvania. His excellent record at both Wentworth and York, where he stood first in his class, earned him the assignment to Midshipmen's School.
Dean Garran received some fan mail recently from R. C. Snell Tuck-Thayer '44, A.S. USNR at Notre Dame where he was then stationed in Midshipmen's School. Noting that he was liking Dartmouth better all the time, Buzz wrote, "Thank God I took engineering, got used to frequent quizzes and learned how to solve a problem effectively."
Hugh McLaren Jr. '40, lieutenant (jg) USCGR, was married to Gertrude Helen Bergman in New York City March 25. Congratulations and best wishes, Mac. Drop us a line and tell us what you're doing and where, if possible.
Paul Breck '43 visited Hanover early in May for a short time. Paul has been working at the Lockheed plant, but has left there to enter the Service.
THE TRAVELING TANZERS are in the Army now. Capt. Radford C. Tanzer '25, MC AUS, is an instructor in surgery at Bushnell General Hospital, Brigham City, Utah, and his wife, Lt. Velma M. Tanzer, ANC, is on duty with an evacuation hospital overseas.
