Major Bill Bell, whose promotion was recently recorded, dropped us a line from the Southwest Pacific enclosing his donation to the Alumni Fund. July will mark two years in the Pacific area for Bill and he is looking forward to Christmas at home. Bill said that the "Mint Bag" gave him the news of other 37'ers in his area, but he hasn't met any there as yet. Bill's Dad informs us that on April 19 Bill was awarded the Bronze Star Medal It is Lt. (jg) Brad Petersen now, writing from 1641 Laurel St., So. Pasadena, Calif., and saying that "sailing through the Golden Gate far surpassed any thrills experienced in the Southwest Pacific." He reached Los Angeles just in time to attend a Dartmouth meeting and saw Johnny Merrill who was the only other '37er there. By now Brad has probably received his new assignment and will soon be ready with further news

Ted Bennett, '45, sent along a letter with regard to his brother Capt. Willis Bennett's doings and we at the same time heard from Bill himself. In October '42 Bill became a Ist Lt. attached to the Medical Corps with the Ski Troops. Soon after they made him a ski instructor due to lack of patients. In April '43 he was sent to Carlisle Medical Center to receive his military medical training and from there was attached to the 680th Medical Collecting Co. for Amphibious training. Bill was with the first group of "invaders" on Kiska and there received his Captain's rating; Now he is back in Colorado waiting for his next move which might be some Skiing. Ted claims Bill has some interesting experiences to relate Lt. (jg) George Elmore writes from the Southwest Pacific saying that he has been rather busy for the past few months. Being unable to share his experiences with us, he tells us that his young son whom he hasn't seen in well over a year is now walking and talking. George would like to be able to spend next Christmas with him.

After 16 months as a Navy Doctor with the Sea-Bees in the Aleutians, he is now attending the School for Tropical Medicine, Bethesda, Md., and hopes to head for the Southwest Pacific after that. Don is back at Miami looking forward to Barb and Susan joining him as long as he is there S/Sgt. Frank Pickell has been rather busy in the Italian area. In January, his battalion was cited. When last heard from, he was in the Anzio Beachhead area Mary Lou Falion writes for Bill saying that he is now an Ensign in the Navy Supply Corps and is heading for the South Pacific. Their youngster, Wendy, is now about ten months and is quite a cutie promising many exciting moments ahead. We'll welcome hearing from you again

He sent an interesting account from a New York paper concerning twelve glider pilots who having participated in the invasion of France wanted to return to England in order to make another trip. The first glider pilot found an abandoned and dilapidated jeep, got it in a semi-running condition and started across No-Man's land for the Allied Beachhead picking up other glider pilots along the way. Soon there were eleven Britain-bound pilots hanging on fenders, windshields and other available spots when another pilot hailed them. There wasn't an inch of room, but the twelfth man spotted an Unexploded bazooka shell in the twisted frame of the jeep and with great effort removed the shell and then climbed aboard as the others squeezed together to make room. The twelfth man was Rip Ripsom.

A VETERAN of the South Pacific, George Elmore '37 dreams of a white Christmas.
