The Smith College Museum of Art received a pair of Japanese hand scrolls, with paintings attributed to Sumiyoshi Jokei—a master of the Tosa School—and calligraphy by a member of the Shoren'in School in Kyoto. They are from the Edo period (1615-1868). The scrolls (17th century) were donated to Smith by Ann and Luke Case. Luke owned the scrolls for almost 50 years. His Navy service was interrupted by a back injury in 1955, and he was admitted to the naval hospital in Yokosuka Japan. His ship left for Hong Kong, leaving him in Japan to recover. During his recovery he had the freedom to leave the base in the evenings. While exploring the city, he happened upon The High Grade Curio Shop, where he found and purchased the scrolls. The scrolls, which are a highly important addition to the Smith museums Asian holdings, are the centerpiece of a spring exhibit, "The Legend of Hachiman: A Hand Scroll of the Tosa School."

The holiday luncheons were held in Boston and New York in December. Welcome newcomer, Ed Quinn. Tom Tyler and Steve Mullins were honored with the Gillespie Award for their efforts in organizing the Midwest mini-reunion.
It is still not too late to make plans to attend the 50th reunion. As of January, 219 classmates have indicated that they will attend (plus 56 maybes). If you have indicated that you will not attend, reconsider. If you have not replied, join the class. Make your "maybe" into a certainty. Reunion chair John Gillespie has done another out- standing job organizing this reunion. '54 out!
