CLUB, ACTIVE AS EVER, CELEBRATES FIRST YEAR UNDER V-12 PROGRAM

ON July 1 of last year the largest V-12 Unit in the country enrolled at Dartmouth College. The problem of meeting the extra-curricular needs and desires of these men was by no means a small one. At that time the Dartmouth Outing Club began its thirty-third year and immediately embarked upon a program which not only proved popular with the trainees but has since met with the approval of the Navy administration as well.

There were enough Dartmouth men left on campus last year to take over the administrative functions of the Club. Tom Dent, veteran soccer and lacrosse coach and long a trustee of the Club, was appointed to the position of General Manager by President Hopkins. Alex McPherson '44 was president at that time, and with the beginning of the fall term in November Harlan Brumsted '46 assumed the responsibilities of president. Both these men began their Navy careers in the V-12 Unit last July. McPherson is now an Ensign aboard ship and Brumsted only recently began his officer's training at the Pre-Midshipman School at Asbury Park, N. J. Now, with the start of the 34th season, there are very few former Dartmouth men. in the Club. All of the department heads—with the exception of Winter Sports—are V-12 men. The chairman of Cabin & Trail is Al Gustafson, USMCR, and the new president is your author, a Navy trainee. We realize the honor that has been bestowed upon us and by the time peace is restored and the old Dartmouth is revived, we hope that the fact that we did realize our responsibility will be much in evidence in the annals of the DOC.

DOC NIGHT OPENS 34TH YEAR

The annual DOC Night was held this year in 105 Dartmouth Hall on the evening of July 20. Many of the '48's and new V-12 trainees together with a host of the Club membership were present for this meeting which included talks by Tom Dent, Ross McKenney, and Doug Wade, the College Naturalist. A quartet led by Bill Childs, USMCR, entertained with a couple of Dartmouth songs and some of the old stand-by Chubber songs. The movie, "White Water," was shown with Ross acting as commentator.

A big trip was held on the July 22-23 week-end to the Ravine Camp for the purpose of exposing the new members to the beauties of the Moosilauke wilderness region.

NEW OFFICERS INDUCTED

The new officers of the Club and Cabin & Trail were inducted at a big feed which was held at Oak Hill Cabin on Friday evening, June 9. Ham steak prepared over the open pit under the direction of Hanque Parker '46, USMCR, was served to 35 members. Twelve C&T'ers enjoyed for the last time the fellowship for which the DOC is known, among them being five department heads. Seven new men received their C&T emblems and three have already assumed positions in as many departments.

HAROLD HILLMAN PRISONER OF WAR

Captain Harold Q. Hillman, 28-year-old son of Harry Hillman, veteran Dartmouth track coach, had been stationed somewhere in Italy as a pilot of a Liberator bomber until recently when he was forced down over enemy territory. Word came the latter part of July that he had been captured and is now a prisoner of war.

As a skier his reckless tactics earned him the name of "Wild Man Hillman" (he was one of the first to schuss the headwall of Tuckerman's Ravine), but his ability on the boards did not go unheralded. In his freshman year he made the varsity ski team, taking a third in the downhill at the 27th Annual Winter Carnival held in Hanover and another third in the same event in the 1937 ISU Championships held at McGill University. He was also picked for the 1940 Olympic Ski Team which failed to materialize due to the war.

INDUCTION FEED for Cabin and Trail and new DOC officers at Oak Hill Cabin ended the Club's spring-term activities in June. Shown in front center among the 35 present are Ross McKenney, woodsman adviser; Tommy Dent, general manager; and Harlan Brumsted '46, retiring president. Quillie Brazel, USNR, new president, is at extreme left, second row.
