My promise of writing a newsletter after filling in for Ed Bock in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE did not materialize, because the news from the 43's has slowed up to a trickle. Please drop a line if it is only a short note. Many boys have asked for addresses and it would help me to know the latest ones.

RIPPLES HERE AND THERE:

Lt. (jg) Howie Leavitt seems to have covered the country, having been at Notre Dame; Cape May, N. J., for anti-sub training; 5 months at Harvard Communication School; next Coding Room at Norfolk Air Station; then to San Bruno, Calif.; Oceanside, Calif.; and finally to Port Hueneme. Howie's wife, the former Margaret Mentzer, Smith 43, is teaching at Westbrook Junior College. Bill Coughlin and Ted Driscoll have been seen at San Bruno Advance Base Personnel Depot, Jim Kerley in Glendale leaving for Naval Indoctrination School at Tucson, Bob Lappin at Terminal Island, San Pedro, while Don Clark writes that life aboard his battleship is dull with occasional moments of excitement.

A pleasant note from Mrs. Bartemus tells us that John is a prisoner of the German Government. I quote from the letter.

The following propaganda broadcast from Germany has been intercepted quote "Dear mother, I am now a prisoner of war and have arrived at a permanent camp. I am in the best of health and being treated very well, so please do not worry any more. For the information concerning letters and parcels, go to the Red Cross. Now keep the home fires burning and tell my friends to be sure and write, all my love to you and George, John W. Bartemus."

Thank God that I know at last John is alive and well.

We, too, thank God for the good news of John. Major Cy Brown writes that he is with a few Dartmouth men in the troop carrier wing. Those mentioned are Walt Petit '43, Major W. E. Walk Jr. '4O, Captain C. G. Williams "25, and Lt. Col. W. H. Parkhill '3g. It goes without saying that this group spends a few hours reminiscing over the good old days.

Sgt. H. C. Thomas Jr. still is up in the Aleutians with good old Johnny Krol. He mentions the fact that it gets pretty cold up country. Its been —4l° F. already and they expect it to hit —6s° F. later. Ouch! Howie ran into Jack Hathaway, Theta Delta of Bronxville, N. Y. after spending a couple years in the Aleutian regions. Bill Bartholomew, we are told was in the Normandy and Mediterranean invasion as an ensign on an L. S. T.

Pfc. Walt Howe is in France and states that from all reports Paris is equal to five ISlew York's. This even from confirmed cosmopolites. Bill Irvine who is with Walt, apparently grew up with Bob McCaw, knows Paul Randall and .others. Lt. Bob Mara is probably out on the West Coast way these days, note Walt Daggett of Glendale. Pfc. Roger Thomas, after completing the Foreign Areas and Languages course at the University of Pittsburg was sent to Fort Custer, Mich., to guard prisoners, do K. P. (what's that) and then to Camp Grant where he suffered an attack of appendicitis. After recovering, Rog took advantage of a 9-day leave to marry Mary Urquhart of Manchester, N. H.—the date, August 7. On returning Rog got ready for overseas replacement. Cpl. C. E. Miller is somewhere in Italy. Thanks for the note and compliment.

Ensign Bob Scott ran into ex-English professor, Finch on Green Island and in Brisbane met Johnny O'Day and Bob Barnum. Johnny was in on the landing at Lausapor. Capt. Dan Kramer, write home if you are not receiving news-letters. L*. (jg) Jim Wells writes that he saw Lt. (jg) Ray Riddick (Dartmouth's former end-coach) playing the star role in the St. Mary's Pre-flight vs. March Air Field until his nose became the object of a little too much mayhem. Jim met Bob Finks and Howie Geer in California and just missed Art Clement who moved out. Brad Cole, John Conn and Fred Wallis, you are asked _to take note and do something about the following address: Jim Wells, M.T.B. Ron 20 F.P.0., San Francisco, Calif. Faithful Sgt. Bob Garvie writes that pal Pres Brooks is stationed at a nearby base and when both get together they cry in their beer and feast on the past life of Hanover. I understand that Bing Donaldson is with General Patton. Lt. (jg) Ken Kenny was quite surprised when roomie Dixie Daniels came up the ramp with a bunch of Marines recently in the South Pacific. Later Dixie was hit with a piece of shrapnel at Palau and the doctor said he would be O. K. Ken has been in on five operations to date with his job entailing the loading and unloading of goods. Ken has seen Jim Olson, Andy Caffrey, Dick Kimmel, Oily Quayle, and Dampier, who is a marine gunnery officer on a cruiser. A/C Bill Maeck was ready to move from Clarksdale, Miss, due to its closing. While there, he ran into Chuck Dorkey who is a Link Trainer Instructor.

Pfc. Bob Thede writes after making the ocean trip "our naval friends really picked a sweet plum when they got the Navy. Get into all the ports where there are plenty of women and wine (yes!); see a host of old '43er\s; and have a soft (?) job. But after my brief jaunt across the Atlantic, you can give that life back to the whales—l was seasick nearly all the way." Johnny Reps and Wally Benjamin '44 were seen before the ocean journey by Bob. Lt. Bud Hall has given some 3,000 men their basic training in the Tank Destroyers Corps and doing a swell job from all reports. That isn't all Bud has been doing, as he feels he has the real thing lined up in a cute stewardess from Atlanta, Ga. Lt. (jg) Jim Adams would like to know if the stories are true that he hears about Longfield and Ernie Giusti being engaged to a couple of New Guinea Debs? Jim and Chuck Feeney celebrated their recent promotions to (jg) and need I say what happened to Feeney? Lt. Johnny Jenkins writes that Larry Noble was landing French Commandos in the invasion of southern France leading the attack with his P.T. Squadron. Johnny requests John Danhof and Rip Lowman to drop him a line and one to your editor, too. John apparently is getting ready to handle "Forts" even though he has had six months of B-29 experience. S/Sgt. Fred Stockwell is now in care of San Francisco, Post Office, after spending a brief furlough with parents in Belmont, Mass. and with the Mrs. in Wisconsin. George Brichelmaier '43 is now in Chungking according to Charlie Fox '44, who is also there.

Hail! 'Thou Noble Men of Dartmouth.

The second promotion within a year came to Major Cyrus C. Brown when he sported a new gold leaf recently at the Ninth Troop Carrier Command Base, somewhere in liberated France. He fills the capacity of Communications Officer with his headquarters-supervising the construction and maintenance of wire connections between Troop Carrier Fields both in England and on the continent. Major Brown's unit formed part of the ensemble of "Bus Drivers of the Wingfantry" who led the way in the invasions of Normandy, Southern France, and the most recent, greatestever airborne assault on German-held Holland.

Lt. Joseph B. Miskell Jr. has been awarded his second Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal, equivalent to a third award of the medal, for courage, coolness, and skill displayed on bombing attacks over Germany. He is navigator at the Eighth Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress Group.

His division of four dive bombers sank a medium-size Jap cargo ship so quickly that the last pilot to dive on it "didn't even have a visible target" said Marine Captain Ernesto H. Giusti, a dive bomber pilot, who has returned from the Central Pacific. The Jap freighter was sunk during a shipping strike off Jaluit in the Marshalls last March.

Capt. Giusti took part in 56 bombing and strafing raids and logged 550 hours of combat flying while blasting Jap gun positions, storehouses, supply and bivouac areas, and fuel and ammunition dumps. Operation from Majuro and Kwajalein in the Marshalls, his squadron struck at the Jap-held Marshall Islands of Wotje, Mili, Maloelap and Jaluit. His dive bomber was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 13 raids, but it was not the unlucky 13th time that caused him the most trouble. On an earlier raid, his plane's two gasoline tanks were struck, but fortunately did not ignite. He lost most of his fuel, however, before reaching his base. Ernie has compiled an enviable record for himself in the Navy Air Corps. Many times Bill Cunningham has mentioned his spirit in his column, especially after the sad news of Stubby Pearson with whom Ernie was operating on many occasions.

First Lt. Warren Van Dyk, with three enemy aircraft officially logged 79 combat missions, winner of the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, is now assigned to a P-47, training station with the Bth Air Force in England as an instructor for pilots freshly arriving from the States.

Ensign Hud King was presented with a certificate as a qualified Flight Instructor officer by Comm. F. M. Reeder. The Commander was high in praise of Hud stating, "By his outstanding performance here, he set an enviable record to become top man in his class. We feel confident that he will produce many of the world's finest combat pilots." Well, I'll be ? Congrats, fellows, and more power to you.
