In checking through this month's mailbag, it's obvious we're darn lucky not be be throwing a Reunion this June. Hanover may be there in all her glory but the grand class of 1936 is scattered to hell and gone. El Camp is with Patton's Army in Germany, or beyond, by now; Jim Dingwall III is a surgeon with the Army in Washington; Bob Blades, a full Naval lieutenant, stationed with the Public Works Department at Alameda Naval Air Station, Alameda, Calif., recently married a Berkeley schoolmarm, Geraldine Frasure-January 6 was the fatal date. Connie Wickham has temporary shore duty in Brooklyn where he is caring for his year-old son evenings; and invites all 36ers up to help—201 Crown St., Apt. 1G, Brooklyn. He reports Steve Stotzer had the neatest, cleanest ship he saw overseas, so would advise all draftees to beware Stotzer. Near Connie is Johnny Sawyer, who jumped from the frying pan into, the fire, leaving General Foods to become "assistant in merchandising to the director of research with McCann-Erickson—world's fourth largest advertising agency." He writes that his two. offspring, Margret aged two, and Sally aged one (and we expect his wife, also, though he doesn't mention her) accompanied him to New York.
Bill Stimson is a toad stabber with the U. S. Public Health Service, assigned to the Coast Guard at New London, Conn.; Jim Tracy is reported at Judge Advocate School in Michigan; Hank Dearborn is with the U. S. Consulate at Guayaquil, Ecuador; Bill Essex has just struggled through Officers School at Carlisle, Pa.; and Bill Garlick is another sawbones (how'd we ever acquire so many doctors?)—assigned to a fighter group at Wilmington, N. C. Capt. Jack Patrick has ended up where we always knew he would—at Leavenworth—but, says he, is attending the Command and General Staff School after some months of practice in the Philippines; KenLieber is a supervisor with the Pennsy at Monongahela, Pa.; and Sid Barr is manufacturing Bonnie Best Brand shoes at Haverhill, Mass., supporting "a little gal from Philadelphia"—he won't tell her name—and two kids. They were invaded last summer by Peg, Meg and Ray Reitman, but Ray and family are now in Norfolk.
Across the Pacific somewhere Tom Luey took part in the Leyte invasion and then after enduring all the hell of jungles, Japs and war, had to listen to Robert Jackson Smith lecture. We understand Jack shows pilots how to duplicate his famous triple gainer with a three-quarter half twist. Another Dartmouth athlete in the Pacific is full Lt. Ted Olson who threw his famous home-run ball at the Japs as the executive officer of an LST at the Luzon landings. Iwo Jima is also well populated Cpl. Wheelock Hauson was with the first wave of invaders, while Lt. Fred Kneip and Lt. Col. Dick Ruby landed under heavy fire. Kneip, always the organizer, has established a Dartmouth Club there and no doubt will have a Golf Club going soon.
With all these scattered so loosely and others too far gone to even write, we'd best keep on fighting and concentrate on at least getting closer together for our Tenth.
Tom Hart was seriously wounded in action in Germany last November 19 but was returned to the Cushing General Hospital, Ward 303-S, Framingham, Mass., where he is recovering nicely; fact is, he's well enough now to decipher the scrawls of classmates and even to see an ugly face.
One of the things I never knew our class had, until last month, was an Official Class Record Book. This is a permanent record of every darn one of us, and while you may think you're safely married to Clarabella and that Susie and Sammy are legitimate, it really isn't official until it's in the book in permanent ink. There's no charge for this but even the non-grads will realize the secretary has to have the facts before they can be recorded. Make your little ones official then and send us the dope. This month we are proud to record that Tech: Sgt. Victor William Gates is engaged to Wave Helen Elizabeth Hobbie of Albany, and to say "Bravo" to the following service promotions: Lt. (jg) Budd W. Schulberg, Capt. William M. Balfour, Major Ed. S. Jacobson, Lt. Col. Edward C. Whitmore, Lt. Henry R. Bradford, ist Lt. James G. Dern, Lt. Com. G. Everett Bottger, Navy Air Lt. (jg) Richard H. Spencer, Lt. Ludwig C. Zuber, Major William A. Ferguson Jr., and Lt. (jg) Clifford L. Porter.
