Our 30th reunion in Hanover June 14-17 was a great success. Each gathering has been unique—different classmates return at different intervals; some have not returned since graduation while others return on a regular basis. For those who do not attend our reunions, consider taking advantage of the opportunity to re-visit Hanover and renew old acquaintances. Many classmates have had wide-ranging and fascinating experiences in their lives; reunions provide the opportunity to appreciate the many personalities who make up the class of 1971. Best wishes to new class president Pete Webster; many thanks to outgoing president Tony Fitz Patrick for his hard work and dedication, to Mickey Stewart for generously donating French wine he imports for us to imbibe at reunion and to John Shapleigh, reunion giving chairman, through whose diligence our class donated $1.8 million-plus to the College. Despite the hot and steamy weather and extensive golf course renovations, a number of reunion attendees enjoyed the links including Bob Milbert, Tony FitzPatrick, Dave Hill and Barry Brink. Some brave souls also wandered down to the gym for a pick-up basketball game: John Ryzewic, Jerry O'Brien, Pete Ruegger, Tom Price, Dave Conlon and I tried to revisit those days of "athletic prowess"; unfortunately three of the group (I won't mention names) left the court limping. Enjoyed talking with Bob Cordy, newly appointed justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court. Bob explained the inner workings of the court and his interactions with other justices. Mike Hannigan was in Hanover the week before reunion for the graduation of his son Brian '01 and was unable to make the return trip; reunion weekend was high school graduation weekend for son Jim, who will attend Vanderbilt University in the fall. Bob Augello, who lives and works as an attorney in Middletown, New York, presently has two sons at Dartmouth; he and wife Joan have been "regulars" on the Hanover plain. During reunion I spoke briefly with Charles "C.J." Johnson, who has recently been named class projects chairman (I am sure he would be receptive to any ideas on projects for the class). Unfortunately, I am told that he became quite ill after reunion, and is presently "on the mend." Many classmates brought their children, young and old, to reunion. It is interesting to note the disparate age groups; some, like Bob Hand, spent the weekend chasing after two young sons, while others relaxed in the company of their collegeaged children. Torrid weather prompted a few of us, led by Kevin Swenson and Pete Webster, to trek to the UVD to find some old swimming holes. Our memory of the path was not as clear as we would have liked, but eventually we found a familiar-looking spot. It was worth the trip to take a dip in a mountain stream (something I had not done since college).
