No further word from our Number One Reunion man, Dick Morton, but we expect he is busy hoping and planning. Rumors have it—from a usually reliable source—that he has contracted for the entire April output of a large brewery, and here in Hollywood we hear Lana Turner is considering an offer to be hostess at the 1936 tent. Hope it's sweater weather.
In fact Dick is no worse than the rest of the 5861/2 other members of the class and if Jacko Morrison hadn't sent on a few notes he received with the dues we wouldn't have any column. First letter is from Dick Wakefield's wife Grace and announces the arrival of Beverly Rich on January 7. Bev has a brother, Jay Stuart, two and a half, and the old man is trying to support them all in the purchasing department of Sikorky Aircraft in Bridgeport. Next wife Nancy reports on George McCleary. Seems George escaped the Navy in September and is. now on the sales staff of Country Gentleman, New York office. (George always seemed more the Hobo News type to us.) They have that unusual problem —no roof—but hope to locate in Darien, Conn. Writing in person, (he has no wife to, slave for him), Dick Spong reports the Army gave him his discharge for Christmas. He is now steeling himself toward civilian life, has no plans but a visit to Hanover, and is worrying about the whereabouts of William Langdon Klingaman. Speak up Willie.
Harry Hughes is now ex-Navy—after 39 months—and is doctoring at 795 Elm St., Manchester. He will remove appendix free for anyone finding him room for his family. Another ex-Navy is Harvey Sevighy. Harv spent the war P.T.-ing in the Pacific, but now resides at 89 Walter Street, Portland, and slaves for Travelers Insurance Cos. He saw Cliff Porter in Washington in 1943 and has talked to Brad Chase by phone in Portland. Joe Whitney has left that city and is now in California. In fact Joe lives close by Morris and myself but never answers the phone so must be a sound sleeper.
Others just out are Nox Howard, don't know where he's living; George Peck back from Berlin to Sayville, N. Y.; Joe Millimet, from Coast Guard to law practice in Manchester; Rog Morse, who left Tokio November 14 and is now accounting for Sylvania Electric Products in Salem: and WheelockHauson, who is starting an advertising agency in New York.
On terminal leave Clay Mellor is in German town, Pa., with Arguto Oilless Bearing Cos. Bill Ferguson recently phoned him from Montclair, and is now an ex-Major employed by Macy's in New York. Clay most recently was a C-54 instructor in Homestead, Fla. He also has news of a daughter to George Hambleton last June but that young lady is probably graduating from Smith by now.
Lt. Andy Schmidt is still in—two months short of the 33 requirement—but hopes to make our 10th; and Lt. Col. Ted Whitmore has just returned to Washington after 6 months overseas. Lt. Comdr. K. Roscoe Wilson was also still in last December and reported the Newport winter very dull. Things must have livened up for Dick, however, as the January 3rd New York press reports his engagement to Mrs. Katharine Forbes Gordon Van Cott,' and a late tip has him actually married.
Final note is from Stan McCoy who is our champion traveler. In the last year he has visited Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Aruba, and Curacao. He is now in Peru and intends to stay.
In lieu of Mickey Mouse we recently showed the Morris and Ostrom children some graduation movies and I'm ashamed to admit, panicked them. We've all changed plenty in ten years and with Reunion coming up how about some pictures, so we will recognize one another? The Editors require one member of the class in each photo but advocate including the whole family if possible. We guarantee to return the pictures in good condition and to refrain from any nasty cracks.
