"Easty" did some fast work with the Class Memorial Fund. Off to a late start, he rolled up a total of $2,450, a tidy sum in its own right, but that's the way he works as General Mills' Division President. One minute he completes a 1,500,000-bushel soybean elevator, and the next he finds himself elected vice president of the Boy Scouts Council in the Minneapolis area—that fellow has travelled one long distance since he left little Fort Ann, N. Y„ in September 1906, to enter Dartmouth College. And all along the way he has done much for the boys of his communities in addition to being an outstanding civic worker.

Ned Warren 'Ol asked us a question the other day: "What would President Tucker think of the youth o£ this age? How would he accept their drinking, for example, and if he were preaching to the student body in the Chapel, what would be his texts?" At first, we had to admit that we did not know.... but then after a little thought, we felt that he would adjust himself to conditions and continue to preach and work for the elevation and advancement of youth. We do think that the world could use some men of his type.

Some day we'll ask the opinion of Hop who undoubtedly knew him more intimately than any other living man of today.... for it was under him that Hop received an early training that stood by him all during his later years as Dartmouth's President.

Offspring—lt has been reasonably determined that Lt. Stanley B. Sandberg was lost in action when the USS Johnston was sunk off Samar Island, October 25, 1944. "Bennie" Benjamin is still in the Army, has made Papa Ben a Chesty Grandpapa, expects to return to Tuck School when discharged Chuck Williams back from Europe, discharged, married October 12 to Jean Gannett, daughter of Portland newspaper Gannett, lives in Ipswich, back with Houghton Mifflin..... Bud still in Navy, will return to First National Bank, and sister Ann is assistant in production department of Houghton Mifflin Lt. Dick Slierwin has his discharge from the Navy Thayer Smith Jr. is completing his medical studies at the University of California Malcolm, back from Italy, is out of the Army.

Peter is still in. Robert captained Holderness last fall and his brother Donald was elected as his successor. Dorothy is at boarding school in High Mowing, N. H.

Andy Scarlett is back from Biarritz, where hard work removed twenty pounds from his frame. But still fit and getting rested, he'll swing back into Dartmouth Chemistry early in March. It was a fine experience for him even though acquired at some sacrifice.... you'll be hearing from Prof. Andy on the Alumni Fund Campaign. It is always a comfort to have him around the Campus.

President Taft's Granddaughter MarriesInto 1910 and we congratulate her on doing so, for she couldn't pick a better outfit to tie up with these days. Miss Helen Taft Manning of Bryn Mawr was married January 30 to Holland Hunter, son of our own Harry who was one of the best liked men in our class. Holland was valedictorian of his class at Haverford in 1943, did graduate work at Harvard, has been with foreign economic administration.

Harry Mitchell is back in St. Mary's, Pa., after three years as WPB consultant for carbon products industry in Washington. We saw Art Lord working hard at Ginn & Cos. last week and a couple of weeks ago were with the Doc Fosters at the Council Meeting in Hanover. Slip Powers has been in Hanover, as were the Russ Palmers awhile back. Saw where Les Wiggin showed old-time piano form at a Dartmouth gathering in California. Jim Frame has moved to Clayton, Ga Dave Colwell, sales executive with Firestone, lives at 565 N. Portage Path, Akron 3 Malcolm Bissell is temporarily at 7345 Hillside Ave., Los Angeles 46 Inky Taylor's Washington residence is 3010 44th Place, N.W.

.... Juddy has moved to 339 2nd St., Cloquet, Minn Cheever Comey, who was promoted to major last summer, has been discharged from the Army after three years' service.

Dartmouth's New President is a friendly sort of a fellow and an easy mixer.... he is sure to click with the Alumni as they get to know him. We have an idea that the whole Dartmouth family will be calling him "John" very quickly, with the possible exception of freshmen who will join the gang when they emerge into sophomores. Any other sort of a president would be a bit out of step with the well-known Hanoverian informality. In the era when "Doc" Basil O'Connor was walking in and out of The White House family entrance with unquestioned freedom, and that fellow has kept his feet on the ground rather well, he remarked as we were walking along the Dartmouth Campus, "Any guy couldn't be fat-headed in this town. They'd walk all over him, knock it out of him, laugh at and finally ignore him."

Frank Meleney continues to do an outstanding work in the field of medical research. Associated with three other doctors, they have reported in the American Medical Ass'n Journal that parachlorophenol, a crystalline substance, is a safe and strong disinfectant which combines effectively with penicillin. Numerous attempts had previously been made to isolate the bacterial agent which destroyed the effectiveness of penicillin in certain types of infections and in contaminated wounds such as compound fractures and burns.

Reunion Plans are being rather well set up for the large number of classes that will gather in Hanover during the summer months .... we still believe that our allotted dates of July 5-6-7 are in a highly favored spot with the Fourth of July just preceding our gathering. Else Jenness and Charlie Fay, heading up the committee, will keep you posted.
