After turning in winning dual meet performances against Tufts and Exeter, the Green runners, jumpers, and weight-throwers suddenly entered the Big Leagues in the West Point Relays on January 26. In this competition, the boys made out very well, particularly in the somewhat exotic specialty of the 35-pound weight throw, in which Dartmouth's Sam Felton set a new meet record for the event with a toss of some 48 feet 10 and a fraction inches to win handily. Captain Joe Conley took a Second in his favorite event, the high jump, with a leap of a trifle over 6 feet. The 3,600-yard and 1,200-yard relay teams came through with second and third places respectively to score a modest but respectable total for the Green in the lair of the mighty Doc Blanchard and the rest of the Army muscle-men.
The next weekend, Dartmouth competed in the Millrose Games in New York, where they emerged with a third in the two-mile relay and a second in the mile relay. In the second race, the Dartmouth quarter milers drew a heat with Notre Dame, whom they followed to the tape. The group performing in this grueling event was composed of Ben Tice, Larry Goodman, Chuck Crockett, and Ken Coyne, running in that order. Joe Conley was expected to turn in another of his sterling performances in the high jump, but was unable to make the trip because of illness.
In the B.A.A. Games in Boston, the mile relay team showed its collective heels to the combined opposition, to win their event against, among others, Colgate and Pennsylvania. With this quartet of sparkling operatives, it looks as though the Green might have some fun in some of the outdoor relays, when they can match their strides with the best runners in this part of the country. With the addition of the several outstanding performers in some of the outdoor events, Ellie Noyes should have a strong intercollegiate team, one which will score a respectable number of points against any possible opposition.
NOT EXACTLY A GREEN TEAMS PICTURE, but this jaunty Frank Buck pose by Professor Leland Griggs 'O2 in his Silsby Hall office serves to indicate that the Dartmouth faculty also has a hand in the varied sporting life of Hanover.
WEARERS OF THE GREEN IN THE CARNIVAL MEET were these six members of the ski team shown with Coach Walter Prager. Left to right: Captain Jack Snobble '44, Odd Ramsay, Malcolm McLane '46, John Chivers '45, Sonny Drury '4B, Vern Lamb '46, and Prager. They took second honors behind McGill.
