Reaches Milestone
June 1946

On the occasion of his twenty-fifth anniversary as president of Minneapolis' huge Winston Bros., contracting engineers, Luther S. Oakes '99 was presented with a 182-page memorial volume of his life and career by other executives of the concern. Originally founded by three Winston brothers of Virginia in the last quarter of the 19th century, this concern has branched out from its beginnings of railroad construction and Minnesota iron range development to become one of the largest firms of its kind in the United States. During the past war, its contracts included such diverse items as building LSTs for the Navy and erecting varied Naval installations. In peacetime it has engaged in large construction projects, both on this continent and in South America—dams, power-plants, tunnels, highways, and industrial and commercial structures. Mr. Oakes, in addition to being Dartmouth '99, was a graduate of Thayer School in 1900 and is on the Board of Overseers for the engineering school. He was President of the Northwest Association of Dartmouth Alumni from 1931-33, and represented District IV on the Alumni Council for two terms, 1934-39. He is the father of Thomas E. Oakes, Dartmouth '41.
