by Rolfe, Davenport, Bowerman '20, MODERN EXPOSITION, by Davenport and Bowerman '20.Harcourt, Brace 1946 (Omnibus), 1071 pp.(Exposition), 400 pp.; Om. $3; Exp. $1.75.
These two compendia, the larger of which incorporates the contents of the smaller, are not so heavy and onerous as the Omnibus feels. Waiving the question of whether taste adapted to all degrees of discrimination is taste at all, both books may be commended chiefly for containing a variety of interesting stuff to read. The short introductory essays on Exposition, Biography, Poetry, at cetera, are clear, readable, unexciting and correct; the brief notes on the great, fair and mediocre authors are informative. A daring picker and chooser could find wisdom and beauty in both volumes.
