Alumni Officers Meet
August 1946

Over 150 Represent Council, Classes and Clubs

IN A REVIVAL of the annual spring gathering in Hanover of key alumni officers, which lapsed last year after a 1944 wartime session, more than 150 members of the Alumni Council, Dartmouth Secretaries Association, Dartmouth Treasurers Association, and Dartmouth Class Agents Association were guests of the College for a series of important meetings over the weekend of June 6-8. Also meeting on the campus in conjunction with these larger groups were the Dartmouth Athletic Council, the Board of Overseers of the Thayer School, and a number of Class Memorial Fund chairmen. The entire alumni group met together in Thayer Hall on Friday evening, June 7, for a joint dinner at which President Dickey was the principal speaker.

Ideal Hanover spring weather was on hand for the first two days of the meetings, and even the heavy thundershower of Saturday morning had no dampening effects since all hands were under cover busily engaged in their respective sessions. The sudden death of Dean Strong on Saturday afternoon, only a few hours after he had addressed a joint meeting of all class officers, was a tragic conclusion to the weekend, and by common but unspoken consent there were none of the informal activities which traditionally end the alumni gathering on a pleasant social note.

The alumni business sessions got under way Thursday afternoon with the meeting of the Dartmouth Athletic Council. The Alumni Council, also meeting that day, preceded its evening session with a reception at the Hanover Inn Ski Hut and an informal supper at the Inn. Thomas P. Campbell '18 of Denver, president of the Alumni Council, called the meeting to order in the Sanborn House library and then introduced as speakers Dean Neidlinger and Dean Strong, who spoke on

"Dartmouth Admissions Problems"; Prof. Wm. Stuart Messer, chairman of the Special Committee on Academic Adjustments, who discussed "Veterans on the Campus"; Prof. Russell R. Larmon '19, whose topic was "Courses in Administration"; and President Dickey, who spoke on "The College."

Following meetings of its various standing committees the next morning, the Alumni Council met again on Friday afternoon to hear reports, discuss new business, and elect officers for 1946-47. Edwin R. Keeler '11 of Chicago was chosen president of the Council for the ensuing year and Joshua A. Davis '27 of New York City was named vice president. Sidney C. Hayward '26 of Hanover was reelected secretary, and two new members-at-large, elected for three-year terms, were Richard A. Holton '18 of New York and Albert E. M. Louer '26 of Chicago. Mr. Holton, for many years one of the top class agents, was elected to the major committee post of chairman of the Alumni Fund for the coming year and was also named to the Council's executive committee, along with Karl W. Koeniger '17 of New York and the three officers of the Council.

Nathan K. Parker '26 of Pittsburgh, former All-American tackle, was elected a member of the Athletic Council for three years, and Abner Dean '31 of New York was named alumni representative on the board of proprietors of Jack-o-Lantern for a three-year term. New chairmen of the Council's standing committees are: John G. Nelson '13 of Manchester, N. H., Nominations; Mr. Koeniger, Alumni Projects; Eugene Hotchkiss '22 of Chicago, Admissions and Schools; H. Clifford Bean 'l6 of Boston, Vocational Program; Windsor C. Batchelder '19 of New York, Class Gifts to the College; Hugh A. Johnson '30 of Buffalo, Class Organization; Parker Trowbridge '13 of Worcester, Mass., Parents; Richard W. Brown '29 of Detroit, Alumni Club Activities; and Roswell Magill '16 of New York, Bequests.

Among the resolutions adopted by the Council were the following:

RESOLVED: That we dedicate this first peacetime annual meeting since 1941 to the memory of the 288 Men who gave their lives in World War II. In their memory we pledge that Dartmouth as an institution shall ever try to typify the principles of liberty for which they died. We salute with pride the thousands of Dartmouth men who served our country at home and abroad. The world will never have to call on Dartmouth men in vain.

RESOLVED: That to the Alumni Fund Committee with its hard-working, jovial Joshua A. Davis '27, Chairman; its able, alert Albert I. Dickerson '30, Executive Secretary; its efficient, genial George H. Colton '35, Alumni Fund Associate; the Council expresses its sincere thanks for their intelligent recognition and enthusiastic presentation of the financial needs of the College. For the many contributions in time and thought to the success of the current campaign, the Council, in the name of all Dartmouth men, salutes the Class Agents and their assistants, the Fund staff at Hanover and the Committee.

RESOLVED: That the Council extend its sincere thanks and best wishes to Captain D. E. Cummings, USN, who is retiring from the United States Navy and leaving Hanover this month. As Commanding Officer of the nation's largest Navy and Marine College Unit, and later of our NROTC, he has made an outstanding contribution to his country. Through his cooperative spirit and thoughtfulness of Dartmouth's welfare, he has done much for the College. A Wah-Hoo-Wah for Captain Cummings!

RESOLVED: That the Council in the name of all Dartmouth men express to Dr. Ernest Martin Hopkins, in words that cannot help but be inadequate, our deep appreciation of what his twentynine years of leadership has meant to the College and to Dartmouth men. That the Council wishes him many years of happiness in the community and the Dartmouth fellowship that he loves.

RESOLVED: That the Council express to our new President, John Sloan Dickey '29, our sincere confidence in the future of Dartmouth under his leadership and pledge to him our continued and loyal support of the College in his administration.

The Friday afternoon session of the Alumni Council was followed by a meeting of the regional chairmen of the Special Gifts Committee for the Hopkins War Memorial campaign, with Chairman John W. Hubbell '21 of New York presiding. The finals of the Interfraternity Hum Contest were held in front of Dartmouth Hall at 6:30 and less than an hour later the alumni officers were settled in the Colonial Room of Thayer Hall, where Mrs. Elizabeth Hayward, manager of Dart mouth's dining halls, produced broiled lobsters and the trimmings for all hands. Mr. Campbell, retiring Council president, acted as toastmaster at the dinner and the other speakers were Meryll Frost '44, first marshal of the graduating class, and President Dickey, who gave an informal twopart address on the Hopkins War Memorial and on some aspects of American foreign policy.

As a special feature of the dinner, Mr. Hayward announced the awards for the best class secretary, club secretary and class treasurer of the year, presenting to each a reproduction of the early Ticknor print of the College. The awards went to Osmun Skinner '22 as the best class secretary, Barry C. Sullivan '36 of Washington, D. C., as the best club secretary, and Donald L. Barr '18 as the best class treasurer. Their citations will be found printed in this issue.

The Saturday morning program started off with a joint meeting of all class officers in the 1902 Room of Baker Library, with Robert E. Cleary '26, president of the Dartmouth Secretaries Association, presiding. Speakers included Dean Neidlinger, Dean Strong, Donald W. Cameron '35, chairman of reunions, Prof. Herbert W. Hill, director of Hanover Holiday, and Albert I. Dickerson '30, executive secretary of the Alumni Fund. After this joint session, class officers adjourned to separate meetings for secretaries, treasurers and class agents, with the presidents of the associations—Mr. Cleary, Robert D. Salinger '26 and Roscoe G. Geller '12—presiding at their respective meetings. The formal meetings of the weekend were later brought to a close with two luncheon meetings for the alumni Club secretaries and the Class Memorial Fund chairmen. At the former, Clark Weymouth '26 of the Alumni Council presided over an informal discussion of club problems, and at the latter, Windsor C. Batchelder '19 of the Alumni Council, presiding officer, and George H. Coiton '35, executive secretary, led a round table on class memorial funds.
